America's most powerful rocket engine in use propels the Atlas interconintal ballistic missile (IC BM). It is a combination of three engines, firing simultaneously, which deliver a total ol 40U.0UU pounds of thrust. Work is being rushed in the U.. S. to,, build a million-pound thrust engine. Thus its "brain" will have to ac tivate this equipment at the pro per instant and then cause the in formation to be sent back to earth. . ; These are just a few of the ob vious demands on a moon rocket's guidance system. 1 One of two possible guidance systems will be used in the first AF shoot. One is a timing sys tem whereby the missile is made to do certain things on a pre set schedule. The other is a "command system" whereby con trollers on earth will cause the rocket to take certain actions. De tails of both systems are secret.
