have adopted the line that the
Soviet space, lead was limited to
the great size of its rocket en
gines. It is believed by U.S. ex
perls that Russia has at least an
engine with a thrust, of one-half
million pounds! and perhaps one
with a thrust of a million pounds.
America's most powerful rocket
engine in use propels the Atlas
interconintal ballistic missile (IC
BM). It is a combination of three
engines, firing simultaneously,
which deliver a total ol 40U.0UU
pounds of thrust.
Work is being rushed in the
U.. S. to,, build a million-pound
thrust engine. Progress on it is a
secret. , ,
U. S. spokesmen have tried to
minimize Russia's historic feat of
putting the first satellite into or-
I bit by claiming that the U.S. was

of space research other than in
rocket engine development, and

circle the moon first, this feat
will explode the hope of some
U.S. experts that the Reds are
behind the U.S. in guidance sys
tems and other facets of space
flight.

The moon is a quarter of a mil
lion miles away, circling the
earth in space and therefore a
tricky target. After about a two-
day trip through space at just the
proper split-second, the rocket has

system that will slow down the
locket from the speed of 25,000

moon's pull to head back to earth.
This rocket is expected. to col
lect scientific data on the moon.
Thus its "brain" will have to ac
tivate this equipment at the pro
per instant and then cause the in
formation to be sent back to
earth. . ;
These are just a few of the ob
vious demands on a moon rocket's
guidance system. 1
One of two possible guidance
systems will be used in the first
AF shoot. One is a timing sys
tem whereby the missile is made
to do certain things on a pre
set schedule. The other is a
"command system" whereby con
trollers on earth will cause the
rocket to take certain actions. De
tails of both systems are secret.
