The special labor court lias been known to impose fines on housewives lor abusing servants or asking them to work overtime and under soviet, laws a servant can be dismissed for the most substantial reasons (inly and even where there is good reason for the dismissal the discharged servant must he maintained by the former employer for one month. From all this governmental interference in the servant problem the inevitable result has been the virtual abolition of domestic service. Only the very wealthy can now afford to keep servants and even the rich find it impossible to toler ate them. Thus is another unemployment crisis created in 'jobless Russia." The political experts in whose hands rests the immediate destiny of distressed Russia have made the mistake, common to those who believe the world belongs to the wage earner, of making the worker and his work intolerable to the employer by their very efforts to make the laborer's life Utopian. In their eagerness lo give Russian domestic servants per fect jobs the experimentalists have rubbed them of the jobs, whether good or bad, they did have.
