a month's vacation illi pay and a clothing allowance that
ninny housewives miniil envy are sumo ol' the advantages
the servant class enjoys.
The special labor court lias been known to impose fines
on housewives lor abusing servants or asking them to work
overtime and under soviet, laws a servant can be dismissed
for the most substantial reasons (inly and even where there
is good reason for the dismissal the discharged servant must
he maintained by the former employer for one month.
From all this governmental interference in the servant
problem the inevitable result has been the virtual abolition
of domestic service. Only the very wealthy can now afford
to keep servants and even the rich find it impossible to toler
ate them. Thus is another unemployment crisis created in
'jobless Russia."
The political experts in whose hands rests the immediate
destiny of distressed Russia have made the mistake, common
to those who believe the world belongs to the wage earner, of
making the worker and his work intolerable to the employer
by their very efforts to make the laborer's life Utopian.
In their eagerness lo give Russian domestic servants per
fect jobs the experimentalists have rubbed them of the jobs,
whether good or bad, they did have. The relation between
employer and employe must be a ."0-.ri0 proposition. Just as
there are conditions under which labor cannot work, so there
are conditions under which the employer cannot continue as
mi employer of labor.

Clothes do make the man! A decade ago Yon Uindenberg ,
was held up as a symbol of Teutonic military efficiency and'
ruthlessness. lie relict ted the outside world's idea of what
il true product of Herman knHiir should be, preaching "blood
and iron diplomacy" and appraising the man-power of a
country by its tniantity of run fodder.
Now, only 10 years later, be is found declaiming on the j
general weal of humanity, the ideals of justice and etpialily
for all nations, the mces.-ilv nf forget t
1'eds and class barrier-.. Today he ur
cently trod upon by Vi many'.-, military aristocracy of which
he was symbolical, to think 1'u. t of international peace and
domestic demonaiy.
To what is to be attributed this amazing transformation?
Clothes, says the p: y holoi'.tsi . In the old days of military
grandeur and arroganc.v Yon Uindenberg was always in mili
tary attire. Today he walks abroad in the conventional
swallow-tail coat of cm- who holds high office by the choice
of the people. In the ;::nli nf a soldier he believed anil acied

carded the iiiiil'oini ul' the .-oldier he also discarded the
soldier's state of mind.
All fairy tales have in ihem a base on solid truth. That of
the little tailor who pioved a mighty hero is no exception.
The women hav e long recogn'r.eil how much depends upon
the personal waidrohc, and every correspondence course in
