NINE LIVES LOST IN TRAIN WRECK I ; kkvivJncj the uivek tkaffic ' Modern iiuluHtriul and business efficiency not only de mands speed; it demands economy. Which, perhaps, is the chief reason why traffic on the nation's inland waterways, after years of stagnation, is beginning to revive. .; The Mississippi barge and freight packet system has been picking up, year by year. In the near future service will be extended up the Missouri. Government experts are now Considering linking Chicago and St. Paul in the same manner. The Ohio, completely canalized, is carrying an increasing 'burden.of freight. On the Columbia the bnrge is attracting new Attention. . . ' ' While this takes place in the mid-west, the cast is bethink ing itself of its rivers. Many years ago the Connecticut river was an important artery of commerce. Steamers nnd barges ascended it far into Massachusetts; indeed, for a time one line maintained service even into Vermont, although its bouts had to be especially equipped with a sort of stilt-like apparatus for getting them over unusually shallow spots. Jjit the coming of the railroads cleared, the Connocticut of its traffic, for most of its course. ; ( Now, however, certain oil companies are planning to revive it. They are acquiring terminal sites in I tart ford, and are contemplating moving their freight in by water as far as Springfield, Mass.; and cities along the river, as in the old days, are talking about docks nnd piers once more. All of this is interesting quite aside from the romantic Interest that naturally attaches Itself to a revival of these eld-time waterways, It Is interesting because it illustrates the tremendous expansion of our industry and commerce. ' The use of these streams is not going to hurt the railroads. Indeed, it will help them in the long run. The modern indus trial machine is so huge it must use every available means to transport, especially the economical ones. The use of the livers and canals is a sign of the times. An abrupt and complete chaiiH'e from the prevalent faults to trenerosity, (rentleness and jroodness would he n shock that few could survive. To see one-half the feminine of tho world alter its character while the men remained wedded to original .sin would he even more startliiiK-. Yet certain suffraKO leaders lire astonished and disappointed that the women's vote has not worked a miracle. They had appait'iitly idealized woman more tliormiohly than the most romantic lover was ever able to do. Although some millions of men and women used alcoholic beverages in more or less degree before prohibition, there are persons who have never ceased to wonder why the de mand for these beverages did not pass with the riiht lo buy them. They cannot understand why that most thorough of statutes, tho Volstead Act, did not make drys of every wet. Sabbatarians really believed that Sunday blue laws would fill the churches and destroy the taste of the decrators for worldly pleasures on the Sabbath. Advocates of censorship think to kill the public's appetite for the things censored. The fault with the uplift element is not its purpose but its astonishing ignorance of human nature. To change human nature takes Konernlions and ages. V How allurinjf farm life looks to city folk when the car is hittiiiR M).
