I'enple paiising by the post of fice Thursday afternoon noticed a strange looking structure going up in the street just opposite the Perk Ins M ol or com pan y. There was some speculation about the Identity of the peculiar framework of timbers and boards. Home thought It a scenic railway, others were certain that It was a new wireless experiment. These speculation?, and many others of a shullnr variety were all wrong for the structure was built to demonstrate the Kuckstcll axle equipment for l-'ords. The man who said he thought U was a scenic railway was not far wrong for when rifling up the 40 per cent grade in the Kord sedan used for the demonstration omj gets u peculiar feeling In the vic inity of the spinal column. II seems like the car goes straight up and it doesn't hesitate along the way either. Tho rur can be stopped uny where on the surface of steep track tnl will go on up without apparent effort. Hoy II. (.'amp, mautigerof the wholesale department of the Fran cis Motor company, is in charge of the demonstration and acts as pilot of the car which makes the trip up and down the track. Mr., Camp, or someone with mathematical inclinations, has cal culated that the track with its 40 per cent grade, if lengthened for ten miles, would be, twice as high as Mount Hood at that distance. However that may be tho dem onstration does give a visual and convincing evidenc of tho power of a Kord with a Hucksteii axle. With this axle the cur bus four speeds ahead and two to tho rear. MAKE RECORD Illut rat lug 1 1)0 gfrat. advance ment made In spark plug con struction utut dependability in tli last two ymtrs, t ho Cliampioit Spark 1 lug company yesterday is sued figures allowing that hpark plugs in tho ten leading cars tn the 600-m 1 1 41 race classic at In dianapolis. Memorial day fired some 57.000,000 times, under tho tn menduous stress and strain of 100-mile-ati-hour speeds, without once delivering an inefficient, weak r faulty spark. Kach of the 80 spark plugs used In the ten leaf ling cars delivered about 720,000 perfect sparks to the gatt mixture during the race. They tired for an average of more than five hours at tho into of about 40 times a second, "Conducting a full eUargo of properly mixed gn.s vapor the in let valve into each combustion chamber, firing it, and expelling It through the exhaust, and then re peating that process 40 times a second, indicates the necessity for perfect spark plug performance," points out o. t:. Uohde, chief en gineer of the Champion Spark l'tug company. "Almost perfect com bustion is vital to create the neces sary power and to assure Hint no unburned gases waste through the exhaust. . "It was only a fe w yea rs a go t hat sunt a ined speeds of 8 5 a ud 90 mlle.H an hour were considered exceptional. Many authorities on automobile construction and per- Ffi.i.. iw.i. 4f.,.1tnn.l 4.. 'Then Iwo vears niro tlm Cham- plon Spark Plug company re-en-' tered the racing field with lis new compression typo, two pleco con struction and exclusive ullllmanlte insulator. Since that time its product has definitely proved its ability to withstand speeds even lilgher than 100 miles an hour. Many I'ftO-mllc races have been held where average speeds for the entire distance, have been higher, two of them exceeding a 1 UK-mile average. In practically every one of these dozens of races in tho last two years, drivers have proved It unnecessary to change a ntnglu plug throughout tho race. "These races have been the cruc ible u which' tlie nblllly of -Hie spiurk plug used In standard cars has been thoroughly tested. The only difference between the Chanu plon used in racing cars, and In standard automobiles Is a slight one to compensate for tho ex-, treiuo speeds at which racing cars art driven, otherwise the pigs a.-a Identical in every way. ''This remarkable perinrmance record Mnder the most terrific tests has not been confined to a few types of engines, or to this country alone. It has been made in prac tically every feasible type and style of engine $ all parts of tho world. "Champion's victory at Indian apolis marked the loth consecutive world's record for its product and t ho 20th consecutive victory won in major racing competition throughout tht world since it re turned to the field of racing. That Is a record heretofore never ap proached by automotive product." Chrysler Laments Number of Cars Stolen Each Year "One nut of every AZ motor curs delivered to tho public Is stolen within two years. How much lon ger will a motor owning public to lerate such a condition?" asks Walter I'. Chrysler, President and Chairman of ttio Hoard of Direc tors of tho Chrysler Motor Corpor ation. "The responsibility is not upon the police who lire doing th very beat they can. The difficulty Is that motor cars are bo marked that they can be sold as easily as stolen. There may never come a time when some way can be found to steal a motor car but surely some way can bo found to make it moro difficult if not very dan gerous to buy a stolen car. On ev ery car there should be some kind of a . mark which Is counterfeit proof, which cannot be removed and which is in plain sight and easy to read. With such a mark; police officers could easily exam ine tho car and determine w'hetrfcr A Is a stolen car. "Insurance companies have esti mated that the average cost of re conditioning a stolen car is $150. With thousands of ccra stolen ev ery year think of the economic waste. "Tho cost of this crime of steal ing motor cars is met by the car owners themselves in the form of premiums on insurance. Such pre miums aro high. M'ith the proper devices they will bo found surely some day soon insurance rates will bo cut down and so wilt the number of stolen curs. "Tho stealing of motor cars has reached a point where It must bo chocked. And it will bo checked. American resourcefulness has had stirrer problems to contend with than this one. The motor car thief will be thwarted." MR. CAR OWNER! Read what ('HAS. H.
