Vibration ha hwn reduced to a minimum on the new model Kurds by lightening the connect ing rods und pistons. Kiii-h con necting rod and piston usmiiibty, complete, weighs approximately one pound and a half lets than the former type. This reduction In the, weight or the reciprocating purta, combined with a heavier crankshaft adds greatly to the power, speed, econ , oiny of opera I ion and long life of the new models. With the oil pan crania-use ex tended to cover all main hearings and connecting rod bearings Im portant adjustments and replac ments on this part of the mt-r may be made without taking down the engine. The transmission housing lias been considerably strengthened und is provided with an cnlargi-d cover which considerably shortens the job of replacing the trans mission bands by making them ac cessible v ithout removing the case. The combination carburetor con trol which operates from the dasli adds a great deal to the couven , leneo and efficiency of operation. The control permits of adjust ment of the carburetor without leaving the seat and will result In a material saving' In gasoline. Used Car Situation Is Still Difficult Crossing through seaa of mud that mired cars of more cylinders und greater horsepower In hub deep gumbo, Mrs. 10. K. Allen, of Los Angeles, California, and her 14 year-old aon, Gordon, hold the ill , stlnction of being the first traiiH 4 contlnent-tl motorists to drive 'an Overland Six from Toledo to the l'ucitiu Coast. (by .1. K. I,.) The used ear proglem continued Ui- buglx-ir of the automobile in dustry. Various attempts at stall dardizing the trade In prices, guar anteeing tin- reconditioned cars and in other ways straightening out the tangle und creating ti inoni favorable imu kl for the used cars have been made but up far none cduld be culled un unqualified suc cess. The saturation point has appar ently been reached and dealers, lo cally und nil over the country nr. daily refusing to accept trade which u year ago or even six months ago would ahve been tak en gladly. The hand writing has been seen on the wall one of the -reasons for thy large mutual dealer mortality is now being curb ed. In the larger centers of popula tlun, of which I'urtland is typical, second-hand cars may now he bought off the lot on practically the purchaser's own terms. One ot the largest establishments in Tort land is now advertising "used oars, no down payment, no brokerage, ami no interest." Of course the payment down Is taken care of in most instances by merely allowing the purchaser to pay the first month of the contract on (he spot before driving the car away. Cars of all kinds und types may be purchased by this arrange ment: obviously n desperate effort to get rid of a surplus of rolling stock. Kc-conditioiiing of used cars and guaranteeing the finished product, in some instances tin same as u new car, has met with success of a kind but has not solved the pro blem. One solution Is gradually coming about from a rather unexpected quarter and that is by the con stant manufacturing skmdardixa tlon, more apparent now that ever before. It is confidently predicted by those in the industry supposed to know that the number of manu facturers will be greatly reduced within the next few yours. The fly-by-night companies which formerly were organized with watered stock, manufactured a few hundred or a few thousand cars and went out of business leav ing orphan machines in the hand;' of the owner sand the dealers, are becoming rarer. Kor some yeurs certain curs have established standards of trade In values largely; because of compan ies which combined tremendous fi nancial and manulacl uring resour ces with conservative policies. I' is along these lines thut the solu tion of the used cur problem will come. Genius, like the flower, Is often born to bins unseen upon the des ert air. Or so It would seiii of the mechanic ut l inatillu, the lit tle town some 4 u miles west of lYndlvtoii in the sagebrush region, who manufactured an eight In u line service car from parts of sev eral odd Fords und other nondes cript machines. This unusual feat was accomp lished by placing two Kord engine blick end to end on u tractor crank case. The crank shaft was con structed of three regular Kord crankshafts. The original carbur etors have been retained un this unusual hybrid und function one to each block. ' And the machine actually runs! When the writer Inspected H rec ently the owner obligingly started her up und the two Henrys, coupl ed together like Siamese twins, hit on all eight, cylinders without a miss. It Is very generally rumored ab out the Industry that . Nash Is working on n new light cur to be brought out In competit ionwtt nd brought out in competition with the Kord,- Stur, Chevrolet,. Over-' land and other curs In the popular price class. This latest product has been y' clept Ajax, according to the re ports. No production plans or de tails of the design have been an nounced as yet. The variance In the diameters of the balloon tires now being fur nished on the different cars seems to indicate that the low pressure cords are still more or less in tne experimental stage and that the manufacturers huve not definitely agreed which size Is best. It Is no uncommon thing to see u line of curs with several differ-' ent sizes of tires and rims on dif ferent models. This condition; while inconvenient at the present time, particularly to the tire man, will' no doubt be "eliminated In a (short time. "Kor that reason we con sider this highly favorable attitude on the part of the foreign buyers toward the six cylinder Oldsmobile as highly complimentary to both the appearance and performance of the cur. "Approximately i.utitl Oldsmo blleu were exported in IH23, while in 1124 the number of Oldsmobiles sent, abroad whs nearly 4.f!0.
