TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 1917 LA GRANDE EVENING OBSERVER PAGE THREE GIRLS' BAND TO APPEAR IN PUBLIC BY THANKSGIVING UNIVERSITY OF OREGON, Eu jjene, Nov. 20. "By Thanksgiving the woman's band will be ready to appear in public," said Albert E. Perfect, di Tector of the band at the University of Oregon. "We will play somo marches," he continued, "but national airs will Trcdominute." While forty girls have signed up for the band, only twenty-five will start work immediately, as the number of available instruments is limited. The -clarinets and cornets seem to be the most popular. "But the saxophones -would be," Mr. Perfect declared, "if -we had more of them. At present we Tiave but one:" Mr. Perfect has gath ered the instruments from various sources and the girls will rent them from him. The director asserted that by spring the girls will be prepared to make a concert trip, appearing in sev eral towns in Oregon. THE SUGAR SITUATION. The threatened sugar famine makes it imperative that Individuals and families conserve sugar at once. To be sure, the burden of this task will fall largely on the housewife and on those who prepare food In public places: for the women of the Nation purchase 90 pr cent of the food stuffs. The Food Administra tion is requesting that the Candy Makers and allv Manufacturers re duce their purchases one-half until January 1st when the last beet crop and West Indian crop will become a vallable. Our wholesale dealers are cooperating with the Pood Ad ministration to serve the people to the best advantage, and they ask that their retail dealers will no buy more than a 15 day supply nor sell to the Individual buyer more than Is re quired for 15 days. Our present sugar supply is suffic ient for our needs perhaps not for our demands but surely for the needB of the body. As a matter of fact The condition of the average person In this country would not suffer to any extent If he were obliged to forego sugar almost entirely for a few weeks; the health of many would bo improved If the excessive amount now eaten daily by them were permanently docreased. The amount of sugar usod by the Individual can be materially reduced by eliminating the needless use of Bugar In oversweotenlng tea, coffee, and other table beverages, and by giving preference to dishes which contain little or no sugar, such as fresh fruits or baked apples, etc.; In stead of sweet puddings, or a salad In nlaco of dessert. Reduce vour use I of sugar and get the delicious nutty I flavor of cereals and the natural taste of fruits. Christmas is coming with Its cus tomary holiday demands for "good ies." Do your bit by using the sweet fruits, r'alsens, dates and figs; fresh fruit such as oranges and ap ples with nuts and popcorn. If you make candles use glucose and corn syrups; they will give splendid re sults. The French have been for some time on a ration of 21 pounds per capita or less than one ounce a day, while Americans have been using at the rate of 90 pounds percaplta per year. The French and Allies will be supplied If the Americans will reduce their consumption one third and purchase In 16 day quan tities by all means do not hoard sugar, it will be cheaper Inside of two months.
