German lenses can no longer be
bought In the open market. England
had to meet this same difficulty in
the earlier stages of tie war by pur
chasing the lenses or O f required
type from individual owners. Eng

her own uses. The Bureau of
i Standards of the Unili J States De
partment of Commerce is now per
fecting a substitute for the German
"crown barium" glass ured for lenses
'and American manufacturers will
'. later be able to meet the needs with
special lenses of new and improved
types now being designed for this
j work.
The present situation, however, is
'that with airplanes soon to bo ready
for service, suitable lenses cannot be
bought. Possessors of the required
types are urged to do their bit by
enlisting their lenses iu the service
of the Army. They are asked to
immediately notify the Photographic
DiviBion of the Signal Corps, U. S.
A., Mills Building Annex, Washing
ton, D. C, of lenses of the following
descriptions which they are willing
to sell, stating the price asked:
Tessar Anastlgmat Lenses made
by Carl Zeiss, Jena, of a working
aperture of V. 3.5 or F. 4.5, from
8 1-4 to 20 inch focal length.
Bausch & l.omb Zeiss Tessars, P.
4.5, from 8 1-4 to 20 Inch focal
length. ,
Volgtlander Ilellar Anastlgmat
Lenses, F. 4.5, 8 1-4 to ?4 Inch focal
length.
Practically all of the. lenscB of
these types In America will be re
quired, but the 8 1-4 inch lenses are
most urgently needed.

of the Hippodrome Vaudeville Road
Show No. 6 at the Arcade theutre
for one day only. This week's bill
is made up of some mighty clever
acts and the overture by the Arcade
orchestra and the itiystdno comedy
with Charles Murray and Louise
Fuze tid a will make a well rounded
bill.
Little Allrlght who is with this
vaudevillo show certainly lives up
to his name as ho does some very
clever Juggling nnd acrobatic acts
that no other race of people have
perfected outside of tho Japanese,
as all of their tricks are done in a
finished and graceful manner nnd his
act has always been ft big hit whor
ever he nppoared.
The Shorts are a talented lady
and gentleman who will appear in
an artistic singing nnd dancing of
fering. They have both very good
singing voices nnd sing sensible songs
with a clear articulation. Their
dnnclng numbers nre a feature of
their act and as lerpslchorean nrt
Ists they lmvo no equal.
Morrison and Clifton Is a leum
mnde up of a talented young man
and a very pleasing and preposses
sing young lady who present n com
edy singing nnd talking act which
they call Echoes from the Ould Sod.
This not conies very highly recom
mended. The male member of this
Duo Is a natural Irish comedian and
nil of bis material Is put together
for laughing purposes only nnd his
quaint nnd original way of putting
his patter over Iihh always set the
audience in a roar of laughter.
The Les Legerts are a man and
woman who perfnt in a series of nov
elty gymnastic feats that are quickly,
daringly and gracefully executed.
They do many anil difficult feats in
balancing doth luind-to-haml and
head-lii-head. This act Is n nov
elty and has always proved to he
a sure winner.
COMKDY AND THRILLS AT
STAR THEATRE TODAY.
Today and tomorrow's program at
the Star Theatre is made up of some
mighty good subjects. For those
who enjoy a good laugh--arfE who
doesn't Lonesome Luke will be
there in another of his roaring com
edies called "Luko Lores Ills Pa
tients." It shows the tall comedian
ns a doctor of a Sanitarium and the
troubles he has come thick and fast.
This has been rated as one of Ills
best. If not his best, comedy.
A wonderful drnmi called "The
Burning Silence" is also on the bill
land the press notices have given it
a very good write-up. The ever
popular Helen Holmes will also he

GAME SINCE 1897
MINNEAPOLIS, Nov. 20. Twenty
years of football, and still going
strong. That's Bob Mnrshall, negro,
one-time star end of the University of
Minnesota.
Marshall began his football career
on the Central High School eleven here
in 1897. He played with the varsity
in l!)04-'05-'0G. In his last year at the
university, he booted a goal from
field and defeated Chicago, 4 to 2.
Since leaving college he has been,
playing semi-professional football and;
is in the lineup of one of the local'
teams this fall. He is 35 years old..

The prophetic vision of those
who founded this great railroad
during a period of national stress
is now apparent in these times of
international conflict. Again the
Union needs its Union Pacific.
The Union Pacific is doing its
utmost to expedite the enormous
war shipments from the Treasure
States it serves. Grain, cattle, min
erals, lumber, wool and oil are
needed as never before.
For new equipment alone the
Union Pacific is spending over
$16,000,000 to give American peo
ple and industries still better ser
vice. This is aside from even greater
sums necessary for double-tracking,
additional yard and engine
facilities and other improvements
designed to add to the traffic carry
ing capacity of the property.
Just now some of our ordered
equipment is unobtainable for im
mediate delivery because our Allies
must be served first so we will
win. The Union Pacific and The
Union Pacific States must use
available equipment to its greatest
efficiency.
The 41,000 employes of the
Union Pacific and fh'e 11,000,000
people of the western wealth-producing
states now have an interna
tional obligation to fulfill.
Were Lincoln to speak today in
behalf of the Union Pacific, as he
urged its building, he would insist
on those high service standards for
which we arc striving.
