The following letter was received by
' ddred Lovatt from Cal Nelson, who
is at Camp Greene, Charlotte, N. C:
Dear riend: I know you want to
know about my trip and camp, so here :
goes: The Oregon people were fine.
At every big town we passed, we were j
given eats, etc., by the people. They i
even waited through the night for us i
at Ashland and Rosebuig. California
was not very patriotic, but if saw "lots
of interesting things there. 'We slop
ped at Tucson, Ariz., at 10 P. M., and
went to the Y. M. C. A. for a bath.
Afterwards paraded the streets led by
the Oregon band. I
At El Paso, Tex., the Red Cross la-1
dies served coffee and sandwiches. At I
San Antonio, we had regimental pa-1
rado. It sure was great. We had our j
U. S. and Oregon colors. Not much in i
Alabama, Georgia, New Mexico and
South Cnrolina. When we arrives! at ;
Camp Greene we formed our Tegi- j
mennt and came into camp like sol- i
diers, hand and flags leading. Wo
were the only regiment to come into
camp right. We are better equipped j 1
:and trained than any other (one or
two exceptions) regiment in camp. ;
The South Dakota troops were so iiard :
up they hud to carry part of their be- :
longing in gunny sacks. None of thnt
in the Oregon regiment. When we came
into camp the other troops sure cheered
and one officer remarked that Oregon
sure looked fine. Oregon can sure be !
proud of her troops. We drill from j
7:30 A. M. to 5 P. M. Besides we have
to do our washing and cleaning of
guns and equipment. We are sure
busy.

RELIGIOUS CREEDS ARE
RESPECTED AT CAMP

CAMP LEWIS, Tacoma, Wash.,
Oct. 23. All religious creeds are re
spected here and divine worship is
encouraged under orders issued by
Major General Greene, camp com
mander. Members of the Seventh Day Ad
ventist church are given all day Sat
urday for worship. Members of the I
Menonite church are not required to
wear a uniform. Mass is held every
Sunday morning and Protestant
church service conducted every Sun
day morning. The men are encouraged
to attend. '

HAS BEEN WELL MET

EUGENE, Ore, Oct. 23. The un
usunl demand for teachers due to war
conditions has been fairly well met in
the opinion of Dr. E. D. Shelton,
dean of the department of education
of the University of Oregon.
The scarcity feared in the early
fall owing to the largo number of
men teachers who entered the army
and other government service no long
er exists, Sheldon said today. There
is a shortage, however, in teachers
for special subjects such as Spanish
and commerce. The university could
have placed 25 teachers in Spanish,
but only two or three were available.
