BIG HIPP SHOW TOMORROW
The Hippodrome vaudeville show
that was presented at the Arcade last
Wednesday evening was a marked

with one full showing of the vaude
ville. The Keystone comedy picture
will be shown twice. The prices for
the matinee will be 25c and 10c. The
evening pcrfoimnnce will begin at
7:15, the doors are open at 7 o'clock.
There will be two complete shows in
the evening. Admission 30c, children,
15c.

This Engine Can Haul Train Two
Miles Long.
PORTLAND, Ore, Oct. 23. (Spe
cial.) "A new typo of freight loco
motivo has been built for the Union
Pacific System by the Baldwin Loco
motive Works," snid Mr. J. P. O'Brien,
vice president ai d general manager of
the O.-W. R. & N. Co. "It is of mas
sive construction, and in its operation
wll tako the piece of two locomotives
of difforent types ut present in use on
freight trains.
"The total weight of the engine and
tender is 652,000 pounds. The driving
wheels are ten in number and have a
diameter of t3 inches. Tho engine is
a coal burner, with a fuel capacity of
seventeen tons ind n tank capacity of
10,000 gallons.
"The now kx-omotivo is capable of
hnuling, on a level track, 22,930 tons,
or a train of 305 modern 50-ton freight
cars loaded to capneity. In other
words, it is capable of hnuling a train
more than two miles in length. The
capacity of the Mikado, one of the
locomotives to be replaced, is 15,553
tons, or 207 cars."

At the Star Theatre for Tuesday
and Wednesday will be seen a most
pleasing selection of short reel sub
jects. The big Star picture is "The
Railroad Raiders," with the ever
popular Helen Holmes, i The third
chapter is called "inside Treachery."
As a good laugh producer, the long
thin Lonesome Luke has been brought
back and will again be seen at the
Star. The Bison company promises
to come throu rh with a good drama,
so from this iireup one can see that a
most pleasing bill has been prepared.
On Thursday and Friday, the regu
lar vaudeville days, something good
has been brought in for the patrons.
Dick Hyland and two very nifty look
ing young ladies will be before the
footlights for tiie entertainment of the
public. This act with the big Trian
gle picture is bound to more than
please. The management of the Svar
is endeavoring to give the people the
best that can be hnd and also trying to
please all. They have brought some
mighty big stuff to the Star and will
bring just as big if not bigger fea
tures during the season. The man
agement will consider it a big favor
if any of the patrons have any spe
cial picture that they would like
brought here, to make their wants
known and- if it possible to do so, ;he
picture will be presented here.
DESERTERS ORGANIZE
TO PROTECT THEMSELVES

BERNE, Oct. 5. (By Mail.) One
of the strangest organizations on rec
ord is forming in Switzerland an as
sociation of military deserters de
signed to protect their "interests."
Military deserters from belligerent
nations surrounding Switzerland over
run the country. Their presence con
stitutes a growing embarrassment to
the government and proposals have
been advanced to round them up in an
internment camp. ,
Alarmed by such reports, the de
serters have been inserting advertise
ments in Swiss newspapers, calling
upon all comrade slackers to "form
an international organization." The
organization committee consists of
Germans, Austrians and Bulgarians.
