Meade of Sumptcr, who died . at Baker Friday morning, arrived here jthis morning on No. 17 for interment in the Oddfellows Cemotary here. The ( Elks Lodge held services at Baker yesterday, and a number of the Odd fellows Lodge of that place accompan-1 ied the body to La Grande, where the Oddfellows had charge of the funeral. - Mrs. Foley Goes to Presidio Mrs. Pat Foley accompanied her husband to the Presidio in California Friday night where she will remain with him a short time, going from there to visit her brother in Los Angeles, and then back to Scranton, Pennsylvinia, where she will be with her parents while Mr. Foley is in training at the 'Pre sidio. - Inspect Children's Gardens County School Superintendent Ivanhoe and County Agriculturist Spillman spent a strenous week last week visiting many places in tho county and in specting the children s gardens and the work of tho children who are members of the industrial clubs. B. Stoddard's absence from home Sun day someone tampered with his gasoline irrigation pump putting it temporarily out of commission. Mr. Stoddard found that all valves, cups, coils and the explosion chamber were filled with a liquid cement which gum med up the engine and made it use less. Besides this a quantity of oil had been poured over the entire pomp making it a sticky mess. Mr. Stoddard has no idea who committed the ac";, but asserted that he would liked to have caught them at work. . j Dallas Greene Hurt Dallas Greene, ' who has been employed at Hunting-, ton this summer as car checker for the O. W. R. & N. Co., came home the first of last week on account of gett ing hunt there. He fell off a moving freight train and broke three fingers of his hand. However, he is improv- jng and expects to be able to return to Huntington the end of the week. Find Old Sign While tearing down an old warehouse at the west end of the old freight house near the old A. B. C. Laundry recently the workmen found an old cloth "Notice to Tax payers" tacked onto the building. The I notice is dated Nov. 11, 1879 and give;! a list of dates and places where taxes would be received. Tho notice is now at the Observer office. It is signed ; by iS. O. Helping Out Sumptei That the Sumpter committee is tit least for the time being well able to handle the situation that has resulted from the fire was the conclusion reached by F. A. Harmon, of '.'Baker who inves tigated conditions in behalf of the Red Cross Civilian Relief committee yesterday. The committee includes L. C. Edwards, H. E. Hendryx and Rev. R. C. Lee and these men, Mr. Harmon says, have so far taken care of all those who are ready in need of help. However, after conferring with tho committee, Mr. Harmon found that the Red CrosB may find work to do, and if so will do its part. Visit Baker Mr. and Mrs. G. E. La Grande Man Married in Utah The following item is tuken from tho "Provo Herald," Provo, Utah: "Mr. and Mrs. John Brough of Neplii, (Utah) announce tho engage ment of their daughter Venice to Mr. I. L. Schofield of Provo. The mar riage will take place Thursday, Aug. 23rd, in the Salt Lake Temple." Mr. Schofield is a sen of Mr. and Mrs. N. W. Schofield and lived in this city for a number of years. While here he engaged in farming and for some time was book-keeper in the Grande Rondo Meat Co. At the present timeMr. Schofield is well es tablished in the automobile business in Provo and vicinity. Mr. and Mrs. Schofipld will bo at home to their many friends by the middle of September in Provo, Utah.
