Already coming velvets cast their shadows above and many fashionable feather brains are abroiling under August suns and hats of velvet. Black velvet tarns, draped turbans of vivid cerise, emerald green or royal purple velvet, usually adorned with a silken tassel, and large broad brimmed vel vet shapes in black, wine or purple velvet are the most ubiquitous. Straws no longer show which way the fash ionable whims go it's the velvet lid that's on. As for the gowns and suits and wraps of velvet the advance models now being shown certainly have much in the way of beauty to offer as m extenuation of their flying in the face of conservation and economy in war times. Dye shortage seems to have no power to dim their gorgeous hues, nor the divergence of facile fingers to knitting, bandage rolling, canning, gardening and munition making to have lessened tho hnnd embroidery with' which they are adorned. iSmr.rt and eurming little trotteur suits hnvo short box coats of velevt, preferably black, and short rather tight plain skirts either of the samo or of check, striped or plaid serge. White satin waistcoats buttoned up high and mannishly complete a de cidedly swagger outfit. Now that all our best boys are in khaki it adds a bit of relief to see our best girls in such erstwhile masculine toggery. The wonderful and colorful velvet wraps of last season will again en swathe your shoulders this year, col lared and cuffed deep in fur and lined in exotically hued satins. Loose separate street coats with fur collars, cuffs and deep fur bands around their hems in the more somber tones of gunmetal, black tete de nigre. Rus sian green and navy will vie with the garments of all fur. Even in negligees and tea gowns velvet will play its rognl part and loose material of pastel tinted velvet over inner robes of flnunced lace will hrighten many a hearth and homo. Long loose Turkish coats of velvets, in Oriental colors, caught in wtMi cords and tassels of silver or gold and worn with full Turkish trousers of ; black satin will keep many a tired business man nt home nights. I Gleams of metallic embroidery are i n ifi again lightening up the sartorial out look and metallic laces and materials of all sorts are to be used in con junction with the velvets. Velvet suits and wraps are gay with metal 'embroidery, ornaments and buttons .and the afternoon frocks show pockets, yokes and cuffs picked put with silver 1 threads among the gold. The more formal evening gowns ; have ankle length skirts of velvet with i trains of the same. A small draping i of velvet may be allowed up a short j way on the side of the bodice but or- j Hinarilv the realm of tho velvet seems i ! It is said that the manufacturers of j metallic fabrics and ornaments have ; been forced to seek the scrap heaps of j the munition plants for the bits of j metal scrapings and filings of the big I shells for the where-with-all to supply j the insatiable demand of Fashion. "There's more than one way of . going to the front," philosophically cogitatis a bit of brass filing that has come off a shell emtrate to somewhere in France as it is picked up from the scrap heap and converted into part of a gold lace apron for the front of a j debutante's dancing frock. It is hardly j a comfortable thought though that sister particles of those gleaming in , the meshes of golden lace that cover Beauty's satiny flesh at the ball may be gleaming in fragments of Brav ery s tortured, torn ana Dioooy iiesn at the battle. At any rate there is also a com forting thought as well which goes with this close mettalurgic bond be tween munitions and fashions. The same stuff that shells and laces are made of will make both Beauty's and Bravery's conquests complete and vic torious.
