Deep mystery surrounds the activ ities of Marguerite Clark at the Fam ous flayers studio. An eight foot screen has been covtructcd which completely surround 'he setting in which she is workinif anil pass-words and various identilcaliou marks are required before one is permitted to en ter the portals thereof. It war. ex plained by studio manager. Albert Kaufman, that the eight foot fence was not required to hide Miss Clark as that could be accomplished by some thing at least three feet shorter, but that there are others in the cast who are not so diminutive. Pauline Frederick's nile green rac ing roadster, as explained, was origin ally thought to have been purchased by the Famous Players' star as sim ply the usual sign of spring. But now it seemB that Miss Frederick had a purpose in mind. In "Her Better Self," in which she is starred, she uses the car to como to the rescue of Thomas Meighan who is about to be sentenced for murder. The tremendous activity among the Latin-American countries in endorsing the cause of the Allies and the threats of hina to enter the war, have caused considerable embarrassment to Hugh Ford, Famous Players champion catch-as-catch-can linguist. Mr. Ford originally set out to speak all the languages of the . No, Mr. Vignola is not in the hands of the police the episode took place in the Famous Players studio and it was only a replica of the orig inal court room scene which was thus ruined. He had had it constructed for the court room scenes in Pauline Frederick's next Famous Players Paramount picture "Her Better Self." Ann Pennington startled her mo diste the otherday by rushing into the establishment and demanding that she be measured at once for a Boy Scout uniform! The modiste protest ed that, with tho tremendous demand for khaki which has been suddenly oreated by the war, it might bo im possible to obtain enough of the ma terial for a uniform for Miss Penning ton. But the tiny Famous Players' star very truly explained that there was not a great deal of material re quired to cover her diminutive self and the measurements were forthwith taken in accordance with Miss Pen nington's demands. From present indications a large portion of the alfalfa in this county has been winter killed. This question confronts some of our stockmen. They must either cut down their herds or produce some cheap feed in place of alfalfa which they have lost. This may be done by growing grain hay, and by the use of silos. The ilo has come to stay. The past season has demonstrated ' its practicability for this county beyond a question of doubt. There is not a farmer in Union county that does not produce a orop that will make good silage. Wheat, oats, rye, weedy grain, oats and peas, sweet clover, red clover, and corn, have all been used as Bilage craps in this county the past year. About half the farmers in the coun ty that have silos intend to build one or more additional ones this ceason. During the month of March the steers at the Experiment Station at Union, that received twenty pounds of silage and all the alfalfa hay they wanted, mode better gains than the cattle that were getting ten pounds of barley and all the alfalfa hay they wanted per I G.S.Birnie Jeweler & Optician head per day. High prices for hay undoubtedly confront us. If you have cattle, either beef or dairy, and a shortage of feed this coming winter confronts you, you cannot afford to pass up the silo without, at least, investigating its merits. Any of the farmers of the county that have a silo will be glad to answer any questions you may ask them. Last summer, Mr. W. J. Townley, of Union, built a silo to test out silage as a cheap feed to help winter beef cattle. Along with other people of that section, Mr. Townley lost a good portion of hU alfalfa. To help solve the feed question he contemplates building three large silos this spring, and filling them with a mixture of peas and oats. Other stockmen of the county, facing a like situation, might do well to follow Mr. Townley s lead 'Sweet Corn is a highly profitable crop. Golden Bantam is very early and de licious. For Main Crop Sorts, Stowell's Evergreen and Country Gentle men are popular. We have a very Unlit-" ed supply of first class seed potatoes.
