Vernon se lected an abandoned hotel near the waterfront in which to place tho vic tims of a small epidemic of smallpox hero. After the patients were put in the building, outraged residents of the district secured an injunction which restrains the city from maintaining the pesthouso on tho site selected. Ivanhoe, county school superintendent, has received a letter from her son, who 13 in the Navy at Goat Island, telling of the great preparations that are going on secret ly and seriously for the war. He says that it is impossible for outside peo ple to realize tho extent and the mag nitude of the operations of the navy department, and that for those who hnvo relatives in the navy department the future moves are likely to mean that the families at home will be sep arated from their loved ones for some time, and probably be without news of their movements.
