C, Aug. 13. Ear ly today a jujiy in the Superior Court convicted J. W. Slaughter, formerly Chief of Police of Draper, of the mur der of Thomas Wenver last Febru ary, and the verdict carried a sent ence of two years in prison. In addi tion the jury stipulated thut .Slaught er puy $'100 to his victim's widow and granted the County Commissioners nuthority to hire the prisoner out for, labor. His wife nt once put in a bid for her husband's services and there is little doubt that it will be accepted So Slaughter probably will serve his prison sentence at home. He had pleaded self-defense. Earthworms and Clams In No Danger of the Strenuous Life. The common earthworm bas two sorts of nerves. One of these Is a thread running lengthwise of the body between the places where head and tall would be If Hie creature had either. This nerve bas only one use to curry the signal to shorten up. So when the worm, keeping under ground by day, comes by night half way out of Its bole and suspects, though be cannot see, tbe early bird looking for breakfast, wblsk goes tbo slgnul along tbe nerve thread, one end of the body flattens out and locks fast In the burrow, and the rest pulls Into safety. This sort of nerve carries a message at the rate of a yard and a half a sec ond, or about seventy times more slow ly than our own do. The other sort of nerve takes care of tbe crawling. Signals along these nerves travel only an Inch a second. If our Inner telegrams were sent as slowly. It would be a whole minute from the time the pitcher threw the ball till' tbe batter b tar ted to swing his club at It Yet. as the simpler creatures go, tbe earthworm Is not especially sluggish. The fresh water clnm, for lnstunce. gets word from one part of Its body to another at only half tbe earthworm's rate.' So It Is 2.400 times slower than a man. Edwin Tcmiey Brewster In St Nicholas. It is a matter of note that the movie patron is beginning more and more to relish philosophy as spice for his entertainment; and the number of plays having moral lessons in "little packages for the audience to take home," as H. A. du Souchet used to say, is increasing by leaps and bounds. A film that may be taken as a sign-post of this advance is a new Triangle-Kay Bee release en titled "The Moral Fabric;" which will be at the Arcade theatre Wednesday and Thursday. "The Moral Fabric" essays one sol ution of that most vital of present day evils, discord between husband and wife over the latter not having enough to do. Its plot Introduces for the diversion of the wife a handsome young clubman who has no immediate occupation beyond destroying the do mestic happiness of his fellows. W. S.
