F. Al len for the murder of Lewis Butts at Hereford, W. P. Allen, banker and stockman of the Juntura section, ar rived in iBaker yesterday afternoon and spent several hours t in private consultation with his brother in the county jail. This morning he put in a large share of his time at a local garage, overseeing repairs to his car which had been badly battered in the long trip, and this afternoon was again a visitor at the jail from 1 o'clock until late in the afternoon. He intends to remain in Baker until after the pre liminary hearing in justice court. Just when this will be held, is now uncertain, for District Attorney God win is out of the city and will prob ably not return until Friday. It is believed that the examination will be on Saturday. Funeral services for Allen's victim were held this morning from the Welch chapel, Rev. A. R. Willett of Calvary Baptist church, officiating. In terment was made at Mt. Hope ceme tery. Among those present were the father of the murdered man, Jacob Butts of Hereford, a sister, Mrs. An ke Vedder of Freewater, a brother, Lester Butts of Hereford, and a cou sin, Ida Butts of Baker. Most' of the relatives reached here yesterday, being summoned to Baker shortly after the tragedy. An autopsy performed by Dr. 0. M. Dodson Saturday afternoon, after the body had been brought to Baker, re vealed two wounds, one made direct ly through the heart, the other with in an inch and a half of the main wound, and apparently caused by a fragment of the shell. Two rifles, one of them the 20-25 caliber weapon which caused Butts' death, and a shotgun, found in the Al len cabin, were brought into Baker by Corner West. A HISTORICAL OLD TREE. Invention Renders Torpedo Harmless New London, Conn., Aug. 13. At- ter being towed by a power boat down Long Island bound from Bridgeport, a thirty-foot raft, with peculiar looking apparatus aboard, reached this harbor last night after breaking loose twice and being nearly wrecked. The contrivance is a tor pedo catcher, and will be tested offi cially at the torpedo station at New port. i The torpedo catcher was invented by Fred Lapan of Milford, Conn. Its. use by the United States Government, which now seems assured, will be the means of saving many torpedoes during practice, and the inventor claims it will protect absolutely all, ships using it from damage by tor pedoes. The catcher is an arrangement of half-inch wire cables in net form on an "L" shaped sliding steel frame, and is hung from the ship's side about twenty-five feet away. As the. torpedo hits the net its head is held and the striking releases hydraulic pressure which raises the lower frame of the catcher and rear end of the torpedo above water .allowing the propeller to spin without harm. Perhaps the most historic tree in the vicinity of Jamaica Is that on the grounds of King manor, In front of the east entrance, planted over a hundred years ago, It Is believed, by Senator Bmfus L. King himself. That tbe dis tinguished contemporary of Washing ton and Jefferson and Hamilton and brilliant defender of federal principles planted this tree with bis own bands was testified to by the late Hon. John A. King, grandson of Iiufus L. King, In a conversation be bad on tbe grounds of the manor on tbo occasion of tbe transfer of tbe historic property to the village of Jamaica. John A. King, In talking with Judge Fleming at that time, pointed to tbis old sycamore or button wood tree and remarked that bis eminent grandfather bad planted it He said, "I think I'll have a plate put on the tree to perpetu ate tbe fact" Whether he ever did so or not, there Is no plate there at the present time. There are several big holes In the trunk, which have been filled In with cement to preserve It At one time It sheltered a doghouse which stood In the bole at the bottom of the trunk. It Is related that In the days of Iiufus King and bis son, Governor King, there was a bell on the tree, which was rung when people appeared at tbe gate to give notice that they stood waiting to be admitted. Tbe tree belongs to tbe plane tree family. It Is doubtless one of the finest specimens of this family to bo found In this country. Long Is land Life. For sixty seconds Colonel B. stood si lent, bis great face growing redder all the while. Finally he stretched out a long arm toward Dlekeus. "You go, sir!" he stammered. Edward Hunger ford In Saturday Evening Post Social Structure. What is a social structure? It may be an ant hill or a democracy. It is usually composed of a mass of Indi viduals banded together for mutual disagreement It is centripetal and centrifugal. Each Individual would like to get out of It but he doesn't know bow. Small masses of individ uals, also banded together, would like to get out of It, but tbey don't know bow. Larger masses of individuals banded together would like to get rid of some of the smaller masses, but they don't know how. Nobody wants everybody else to stay. Everybody doesn't want anybody to stay. Tbo result is tbat nobody can get rid of anybody. Hence the social structure. Life. When you Wake up with backache and dull misery in the kidney region it gen erally means you have been eating too much meat, says a. well-known authority. Meat forms urlo acid which overworks the kidneys in their effort to filter it from the blood and they become sort of paralyzed and loggy. When your kidneys get sluggish and clog you must relieve them, like you relieve your bowels; re moving all the body's urinous waste, elm you have backache, sick headache, ditzy spells; your stomach sours, tongue is coated, and when the weather is bad you have rheumatic- twinges. The urine is cloudy, full of sediment, channels often get sore, water scalds and you axe obliged to seek relief two or three times during the night Either consult a good, reliable physi cian at once or get from your pharmacist about tour ounces of Jad Salts; take a tablespoonful in a glass of water before breakfast for a few days and your kidneys will then act fine. This famous salts Is mode from the acid of grapes and lemon juice, combined with lithia, and has been used for generations to clean and stimulate sluggish kidneys, also to neutralize adds in the urine so it no longer irritates, thus ending bladder weakness. Jad Salts is a life saver for regular meat eaters. It is inexpensive, cannot injure and makes a delightful, effer vescent lithia-water drink.
