Moths, Butterflies and Beetles Make
Long Distance Journeys.
Mr. William Evans, a Scottish natu-1
ralist, who baa made a lifelong study
of tbe fauna of Scotland, obtained
from a dozen Scot I is b lighthouses 241
species of Insects, wbicb Include two
butterflies, 159 uiotbs, eighteen caddis
tiles and lacewlngs, fort; dlptera, ten
beetles and a dozen other species.
Moat of the specimens were males.
To reach the Isle of May, In the Firth
of Forth, where Mr. Evbds collected
most of tbe insects, many of tbe speci
mens mast have flown across several
miles of sea.
In bis records Mr. Evans calls atten
tion to several other extraordinary
flights of Insects.
Thus, the "painted lady," or thistle
butterfly (Pyramels cardul), has been
known to cross tbe Alps; tbe red ad
miral butterfly (Vanessa atalanta) has
landed In numbers on the deck of a
vessel GOO miles from tbe coast of
England; the common white butter
flies cross the English channel In
clouds; tbe famous milkweed butterfly
(DanaLs arcbippus), abundant every
where in tbe United States, is said to
make the 2,000 mile Journey from
California to the Hawaiian Islands
and has gradually progressed by way
of tbe south sea Islands as far as Aus
tralia. A death's bead moth has boarded a
steamer 200 miles off tbe Cape Verde
islands. Clouds of ladybirds miles In
extent, so that they resembled smoke
from a steamer, have been seen at sea.
A swarm of locusts that passed over
tbe Ited sea In l&Su Is said to have ex
tended over 2,000 square miles, and It

Earthworms and Clams In No Danger
of the Strenuous Life.
The common earthworm bas two
sorts of nerves.
One of these Is a thread running
lengthwise of the body between the
places where head and tall would be
If Hie creature had either. This nerve
bas only one use to curry the signal
to shorten up.
So when the worm, keeping under
ground by day, comes by night half
way out of Its bole and suspects,
though be cannot see, tbe early bird
looking for breakfast, wblsk goes tbo
slgnul along tbe nerve thread, one end
of the body flattens out and locks fast
In the burrow, and the rest pulls Into
safety.
This sort of nerve carries a message
at the rate of a yard and a half a sec
ond, or about seventy times more slow
ly than our own do.
The other sort of nerve takes care of
tbe crawling. Signals along these
nerves travel only an Inch a second.
If our Inner telegrams were sent as
slowly. It would be a whole minute
from the time the pitcher threw the
ball till' tbe batter b tar ted to swing his

Nicholas.
It is a matter of note that the
movie patron is beginning more and
more to relish philosophy as spice for
his entertainment; and the number of
plays having moral lessons in "little
packages for the audience to take
home," as H. A. du Souchet used to
say, is increasing by leaps and
bounds. A film that may be taken
as a sign-post of this advance is a
new Triangle-Kay Bee release en
titled "The Moral Fabric;" which will
be at the Arcade theatre Wednesday
and Thursday.
"The Moral Fabric" essays one sol
ution of that most vital of present
day evils, discord between husband
and wife over the latter not having
enough to do. Its plot Introduces for
the diversion of the wife a handsome
young clubman who has no immediate
occupation beyond destroying the do
mestic happiness of his fellows.
W. S. Maugham, the eminent Eng
