Many touring parties, on . their way by motor cars to Newport and Nye Beach, have been held up by the muddy roads west of Philomath. Just preceding the recent hard rains the road to Newport was in good condi tion, having recently been graded nnd smoothed flown for Diacticallv its entire length, but as much of the i road is without a covering of gravel the red clay soil became very muddy and slippery following the downpour. A few days' dry weather will put the road in fairly good condition again. One party from Portland, with a big load of passengers and camp equip-i .ment, broke down just beyond Wren ' and was laid up for several days 1 1 making repairs to the car.
