Mc Murray, son of William McMurray, general passenger agent of the O.-W. K. & N has been engaged as swim ming instructor at the public nata torium in this city during the summer.- He is one of the best amateur swimmers in the northwest, lhaving won events in many swimming con tests during the past five years. Ho will be at the tank from 9 until 12 in the morning and from 2 until' 5 in the afternoon and at other hours by appointment. He will teach the ad vanced strokes such as tflie crawl and the trudgeon as well as beginner's methods. Young Mr.-McMurray is a student of th University of OregQn, having entered there last February. His first appearance as a swimmer was in the Portland Christmas swim of 1911, when he won sixtrtu in a field of 37 en tries. In May, 1912, he entered the Oregon interscliolastic meet at Eu gene, winning the 20 yard, 40 yard and 100 yard swims. On August 4, 1912, he swam across Tillamook Bay, and in November of the same year won first in the 100 yard P. N. A. swim, making the time of 55 1-2 sec onds. On Easter, 1911! he was first in the Spokane river swim when the water was only three degrees above freezing. While in Ireland wit', his father in 1913 he won the Iris-'.; championship of 100 yards at Belfast in 61 1-5 sec onds. On January 3, 1914, he swam from the Hawthorne to the Broadway bridge in Portland with the water at 37 degrees in 27 minutes. He won the 50 yard championship in the 1914 P. N. A. meet. Liist year he was in California working and did not swim. In February of this year he won the Oregon state championship in the 100 yards. The' last event he won was the swimming race at the nata toritim here on the Fourth of July. Hill Trial Is Held. After a day of testimony and argu ment in the case of the State vs. Hen ry T. Hill, charged with larceny by bailee, Justice of the Peace Parkes has the determination of the case un der advisement. The (complaining witness is W. R. Ellis who had given Hill a mortgage on 600 sacks of grain to secure two nothe for $550 each, one due last fall and one this fall. Ellis alleges that Hill, without any author ity sold the grain for about $900. Several months afterwards, he al leges, he sent the first note cancelled, back" to Ellis and notified him that the balance he had applied on the second note. (By Mail) About $2,500,000 less will be spent for masculine summer clothes on account of conscription. This estimate is vmade by prominent London tailors who - are wearing long faces. It is worse, they say, because the esti mate represents the value of the cloth alone and does not include the profit of the tailoring.
