Hundreds of mil lions and nerhans a hi II inn ffct nf ; timber are being taken up in deals i.'cmsr made along the .Middle Fork oft the John Way nver, lying between (Austin and Susanville, which promise ; not only a continuance of the present J lumber boom but a development tfoat I may make the present activity look ; small. This 2lso has caused many j rumors in reeard to new railroads or I , extensions of present lines but they i iwo sets or deals lor timber lying practically adjacent are being put through, in fact some of the work has already been done ami deeds filed in the Grant county court house at Canyon City. These deeds are for 5,000 acres of timber along the river west of the Grant county border. While the deeds call for only 5,000 acres tSwy are said to control nearly 35,000 acres, ith hundreds of mil lions of feet of timber, together ready for working. The deeds are in the name of Charles T. Early, who is manager of the Oregon Lumber com pany. The land adjoins to the west that from wibich will be-xold timber by the government in 90 days and which rrans a. ftiivneil plans to turt on. Jn this tract 1S4.000.000 feet are to day being advertised and another lot of equal or larger size is said to be advertised very. soon. That he has already commenced negotiations for a planing mill and yard site in McCrary's addition, west of the Sumptor Valley railroad tracks, to tie closed n he secures possession of approximately 300,000.000 feet of government timtier on land drained by uV Middle Fork of the John Day river, for which he will tie the chief bidder, was the statement this morn ing of Mr. Mitchell. A sawmill at Austin with a daily capacity of from .0.000 to 75,000 feet, is included in his plans. Mr. Mitchell estimates Shsit the timber will cost in the neigh borhood of 1750,000, with SoS.OOO for an eight mile logging railroad and equipment and at least $30,000 for the Austin mill. Other details have not been worked out. Contradicting rumors that he was representing the Oregon Lunter company, Mr. Mitchell denied thar ihe represented any local concern and as serted that the purchase of the timber and mill operations, will constitute an independent deal, on which he has been working for more thnn a year. He intended, fle snid, to have things in shape to start operations this spring, but that negotiations with the government required 16 months time. If successful in securing the timber he hopes to commence logging early m 1S17. The available timlwr, he tielieves, ahould furnish work for the mill, as planned, for a period of 24 years. as carefully as we handle them they will surely arrive at their destination in first class condition.
