George Jacobs has answered the roll call of the Supreme Commander, passing from this to a higher realm1, xn the 15th of December, 1915, at the age of 81 years. He was a kind hus band and father; an obliging, cheer ful neighbor and friend. "A workman that ncedeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word truth." Second Timothy, 2:15. He was well known and highly re spected throughout the city, a man to be relied on for honesty and promptness in business. He was a good soldier. On reviewing his "Certificate of Record" we find that he enlisted from La Selle county, Il linois, August 6, 18(52, to serve "three years or during the war," and was mustered into the United States ser vice at Camp Douglas, 111., Aug 27, 1862, as Sargeant of Capt. George A. Sheridan's Co. C, 88th Reg. Ill, Vol. Infantry, Col. Francis G. SheiVnan commanding. This regiment was or ganized in Chicago, 111., in September, 1862, by Col. Sherman and was known as the "Second Board of Trade Regi ment," and was in constant, strenu ous action during the three years. He was honorably discharged at Chi cago, June 9th, 1865, by reason of the close of the war. He "was constant ly with his command during its ser vice, bore a gallant part in all its engagements and rendered faithful and meritorious service to his coun try at all times." George Jacobs was born in Frank lin county, Indiana, Oct. 12, 1834. His father served in the war of 1812. On July 20, 1858 he was united in marriage to Miss Martha M. Bullock at Ottawa, 111., from which union were born eleven children, five of whom are living, viz: Eddie F., Min nie M., Annie R., Roy D., and Bert E., who with their aged mother mourn his absence. Mrs. Eddie Brockway and Roy were the only children who were with him to the last as the .oth ers are in San Diego and unable to be here; He as a member dv and in 1910 quartermaster of the O. P. Morton Post, No. 36, Dept. of Ore gon, G. A. R and was buried, with all honor by his comrades. Owing to the storm the ceremony that would have taken place at the cemetery, was performed at the parlors. The ser vices were conducted by Rev. Ford. The floral offerings from his many friends and the Post were beautiful and abundant. L. I. K. Elgin Farmers Butcher Hugs One of the largest slaughtering of hogs to be recorded in this section for some time took ,place at the Hindman farm on the Flat Monday when W. B. and Luther Hinctmian butchered 50 head, says the Recorder. All were in prime condition and bad been fat tened for the market. Market condi tions have been such the past few weeks that the owners refused to sell, concluding they could secure better returns by butchering and' b'aconing the lot: The work of slaughtering was com pleted Tuesday and required a force of several men. The following day the hogs were quartered and' "cat up. of La Grande National Bank will be held at their Backing House, in La Grande, Oregon,, on. Tuesday, Janu ary 11th., 1916v at the hour oi: two o'clock P. M.
