IN MEMORIAM.
The soldiers are passing, are passing
away,
The groups and batallions, the blue
and the gray. ,
The roll call has sounded, it falls on
the ear . -.'
That is almost too deadened to an
swer "I'm here."
The've fought their last battle and
sung their last song
They've joined the Grand Army, a
numberless throng
Who are singing of peace in the reg
ions of Love
And they answer "I'm here," to the
roll call above.
George Jacobs has answered the
roll call of the Supreme Commander,
passing from this to a higher realm1,
xn the 15th of December, 1915, at the
age of 81 years. He was a kind hus
band and father; an obliging, cheer
ful neighbor and friend.
"A workman that ncedeth not to
be ashamed, rightly dividing the
word truth." Second Timothy, 2:15.
He was well known and highly re
spected throughout the city, a man
to be relied on for honesty and
promptness in business. He was a
good soldier. On reviewing his
"Certificate of Record" we find that
he enlisted from La Selle county, Il
linois, August 6, 18(52, to serve "three
years or during the war," and was
mustered into the United States ser
vice at Camp Douglas, 111., Aug 27,
1862, as Sargeant of Capt. George A.
Sheridan's Co. C, 88th Reg. Ill, Vol.
Infantry, Col. Francis G. SheiVnan
commanding. This regiment was or
ganized in Chicago, 111., in September,
1862, by Col. Sherman and was known
as the "Second Board of Trade Regi
ment," and was in constant, strenu
ous action during the three years.
He was honorably discharged at Chi
cago, June 9th, 1865, by reason of the
close of the war. He "was constant
ly with his command during its ser
vice, bore a gallant part in all its
engagements and rendered faithful
and meritorious service to his coun
try at all times."
George Jacobs was born in Frank
lin county, Indiana, Oct. 12, 1834.
His father served in the war of 1812.
On July 20, 1858 he was united in
marriage to Miss Martha M. Bullock
at Ottawa, 111., from which union
were born eleven children, five of
whom are living, viz: Eddie F., Min
nie M., Annie R., Roy D., and Bert E.,
who with their aged mother mourn
his absence. Mrs. Eddie Brockway
and Roy were the only children who
were with him to the last as the .oth
ers are in San Diego and unable to
be here; He as a member dv and
in 1910 quartermaster of the O. P.
Morton Post, No. 36, Dept. of Ore
gon, G. A. R and was buried, with
all honor by his comrades. Owing
to the storm the ceremony that would
have taken place at the cemetery, was
performed at the parlors. The ser
vices were conducted by Rev. Ford.
The floral offerings from his many
friends and the Post were beautiful
and abundant. L. I. K.
Elgin Farmers Butcher Hugs
One of the largest slaughtering of
hogs to be recorded in this section for
some time took ,place at the Hindman
farm on the Flat Monday when W. B.
and Luther Hinctmian butchered 50
head, says the Recorder. All were
in prime condition and bad been fat
tened for the market. Market condi
tions have been such the past few
weeks that the owners refused to sell,
concluding they could secure better
returns by butchering and' b'aconing
the lot:
The work of slaughtering was com
pleted Tuesday and required a force
of several men. The following day
the hogs were quartered and' "cat up.
