LA GRANDE EVENING OBSERVER THURSDAY, MAY 21, 1914. MARS W I J II L D COLLECT NT PRESENTS NORTH SECOND STREET CLAIMS. Remonstrance to Sewer on North Side Presented Commission. - Contractor J. L. Mars who did the .macadam work on North Second three or four years ago, is trying to -collect his pay. Ho presented an ite mized statement to tne city commis sion last evening, asking for settle ment. The face value of the improve- . ment warrants is $11,640,03, and the interest amounts to about $3,000. The commissioners took the matter under advisement. Prolonged letiga tion brought by property owners on that street is responsible for the de- lay in liquidating improvement war rants. President Wood, Commissioner Russell and City Attorney John Hod gin were in attendance at the ses sion. Remonstrances filed last night against proposed sewer construction on the North Side, were referred to the Friday night meeting when all interested are to meet. Petitions for water mains on East Pennsylvania and on Division street, ' were allowed by resolution. Bids presented by Adam Kolb for the construction of cement sidewalks on N. Street, 'were accepted and a contract resolution passed. He is to receive 10 cents per square foot for the cement. City Manager Lafky's weekly re port follows: The police released three prison erg held over from last week. Ar rested four, one fine of $5.00, one horse and colt in pound to be sold to morrow afternoon. The new chief, Chas. B. Orai has Ed Brady on the swirfg shift, and S. A. Weagle and J. R. Rhodes on the night shift. Other j fines were collected directly by the j Recorder. i The Recorder collected $12.50 j fines, and ?5.d0 forfeiture. Of these ! one old case paid $5.00 and one $2.50 ! after serving half the time. The f or- feiture was in the hands of the form ! er chief of police. The Recorder col jlccted $6.00 dog tax, drew $1,304.48 ; warrants for bills allowed, $1,000 on j Imp. Dist. 57, and May salary for 11 days for former police force of $145.47. I The Street Superintendent spent $70.93 cleaning streets and $75.00 for i grading. He graded 4 blocks at Wal , nut and Cedar, 3 on L. Ave., 3 on M. I Ave., 2 on G., 2 on N., 3 on uro ueu road near stock yards, and on S. Ave. j The .Water Superintendent spent J $37.30 reading and repairing meters, , lowering pipe ana looKing atver sen ' ers. ', The treasurer collected $324.40 for ' street improvements and interest, $25.00 license, and $551.60 for water : rents. Paid $6,699.28 for warrants 1 and'interest thereon, and paid $150.00 interest on improvement bonds. Crandall's where the house burned, and one near 2nd and Main in a shed, broom was on fire. Some one is careless here. It has cost the city $25 or $30 for volunteer ser wce, the chemicals and a couple of scares. Next Monday night the La Grande band gives the first of a series of open-air concerts. The program will be commenced at 8 o'clock, and will be over af'9 o'clock, at which time the band will give a dancing party in Danceland, on Washington Avenue. Director David Haines has re hearsed his organization for the opening open-air concert, and also for the dance so that high grade music is assured for both functions.
