Last week Friday, the residence of Harley j Laughlin was destroyed by fire with nearly aU of the contents. The out- j buildings were also burned. The lit tle boy set fire to the woodpile and the fire was well under way before it was' discovered, Mrs. Laughlin being ton the house and the menfolks being in the field. There was no insurance. Prof J. A, Briffs, the new superin tendent of the schools, arrived this week and is located in Dr. Barnes' house. The professor will meet the teachers and also the pupils of the high school at the high school room in the school building on Saturday, September 6th. " On Wednesday evening the Rebekah lodge gave an informal farewell recep tion to Prof, and Mrs. J. O. Sturgill, who leave on Tuesday for their new home in Milton, Ore., where Professor Sturgill will be principal of the high school at that place. The lodge pre sented the professor and his wife with a set of china cups and saucers as a token of esteem and good wishes. Mrs. Murry Gilkison and daughter left Yesterday for Weiser, Idaho, at which place the daughter will attend school this year. , , Dr. J. E. Gilliland spent Wednesday in La Grande and left Thursday night for Colorado, where he will spend two weeks': vacation, after which he will resume his practice hers." Chris Johnson and wife, Wm. McGregor was in La Grande re. cently to confer with contractors in re gard to letting the contract for a new building to be erected on his property at the corner of Third and E streets. He has sold his residence property across the railroad track to Mrs. Mae McGreeor. The consideration is not stated. ' Mrs. Dave Ashmun and children are visiting the family of C. H. Brown. Mrs. .Geo. The Koester lane is being put in condition to haul out the material for the new steel bridge that the county is to put in across the river. This is a badly needed bridge as the loss of property each spring amounts to considerable and last spring a loss of life was barely escaped. Messrs. A. Lun. John Davis, J. A. Pilcher, Wm. Gardner, F. A. McAll ister, E. A. Carnes and S. A. Dough erty were in La Grande attending the water conference. . . Mrs. J. T.
