In the cuutun of Valuta, lu Swltzer laud, nt the foot of the great Aletsch glacier, lies a small body of water. Lake Marjelen, of which the Journal des Voyuges rexrts a strange fuct At Jrreguiur iutervuls every three or four years Lake Marjelen completely and suddenly disappears. The phe nomenon always occurs during the last days of August' Without warning the lake empties ltwelf. and thegreut qunu tlty of water that it contained dlsap I wars through fissures in the rocks to swell the waters of be river Rhone. So rapidly does the lake empty Itself that the water level of the Rhone rises several meters in a few hours, and the valley is flooded. An old custom grants n new pair of shoes to the Drat peasant who collies to announce the (llsapiH-arauce of the lake to the In habitants of the valley. All the autumn, after the disappear ance of the waters.' the basin of Lake Marjelen remains dry, but during the following winter and spring It grad ually fllls again. - I SclentlDc men believe that the phe nomenon Is caused In some way by the neighboring glnolpr. The man who makes good is the man who can shut out of bis mind all but one thing. An unsuccessful prin cipal of a school once said that every teacher ought to be able to do three things at once. Of course be was wrong. The teacher who does one thing at a time nnd does it well Is giv ing the pupil the best possible object lesson In concentration. We hnve to learn to think clearly amid distracting noises, to go forward on a straight and narrow way with out diversions and excursions that waste our time and our substance' and to keep nt work regardless of the "tired" feeling, the "anting" feeling and whether the fishing Is good or not When the soft breeze comes In at the window we must stiffen the moral fiber against Its allurement .We must pin our attention firmly to the turgid and dry geometry of a legal brief or the serried Ilgures of the daybook or the busy system of a mercantile estab lishment and let every other tbonght a wait Its turn at the end of office hours. You niny hnve board a great lawyir In action In a crowded cotirtroot.v. What was the secret of his power? It was that he would not let the Jury's attention or the V-ltness' tongue wan der from the relevant facts. He kept Insistently to the straight line that Is the shortest distance from polnf to point. He curtly dismissed all thnt was superfluous. Immaterial and .cal culated to blur the salient outlines of the matter In controversy. Philadel phia Ledger. New York Times. Tht Neighborhood Traveler. It Is written, and the world believes It that travel Is the Infallible, exclu: slve cure for provincialism. Perhaps' Ultimately that depends on what the man takes with him In his wanderings Merely to go accomplishes naucht In fine, one need not travel at all. If the man with the common eye will but use his eyes he may brine all the world to him. The Alps and the Rockies are worth seeing. Indeed, but the man who Is capable of really seeing them. If among them. Is capable also of behold Inn landscape and glory In his own nvlKhUirhood Rooklovers' Magazine.- SligMly Inconsistent ' "A patriot should not be concerned wjth matters of mere pecuniary com pensation."
