Than Elewbtre Yesterday.
Portland, April 23. (Special)
Higher prices were forced in the
hog anarket at North Portland yester
day. The advance was from 10 to
15c over the closing figures of last
week. Sales were made as high as
$9.00, two loads going during the
morning at this figure. Bulk of sales
were around $8.808.85.
The 'higher price quoted yesterday
for bogs in the local yards places the
quotation here a nickel above any
other stockyard in the entire country.
At Chicago there was a weaker
tone in the hog trade, with tops down
to $8.95.
Kansas City hog market was
steady with tops at $8.85.

Water In Switzerland.
In the cuutun of Valuta, lu Swltzer

glacier, lies a small body of water.
Lake Marjelen, of which the Journal
des Voyuges rexrts a strange fuct

four years Lake Marjelen completely
and suddenly disappears. The phe
nomenon always occurs during the last
days of August' Without warning the

So rapidly does the lake empty Itself
that the water level of the Rhone rises
several meters in a few hours, and the
valley is flooded. An old custom

All the autumn, after the disappear
ance of the waters.' the basin of Lake
Marjelen remains dry, but during the
