La Grande diamond, and from there
safely guide the Pipping craft of base
ball over a rather perlloua course was
the mission of one Maxmeyer of Pa
cific coast fame, yesterday. La Grande
pulled up during one canto when Hew
itt was woozy and eight men behind
him ail but kicked goal with a series
of weird boots. - Eight times the bell
tolled at the end of that very weird
session and La Grande came back
thereafter with some more gilt-edge
ban and seldom let a Pendletonian
gel to first until the ninth when Max
meyer was touched up. for quite a
tew, and Garrett's cohorts drove la
four runs. The tide was atemmed in
time to give La Grande a well earned
victory.
Barry the Batting Fiend.
n Three times Manager Jack Barry
poled out hits that were good for two
bases and better and a liberal sprin
kling of hits behind readily accounted
for a big majority of the runs. Pen
dleton's infield failed to manipulate a
group of bunts when long drives were
the natural order of events, but Barry
outguessed Garrett nicely. The first
and second, and four innings later on,
were as good baseball as we will see
for a day or two but there were per
iods when long drives and a multiplic
ity of boots redneed some of the bril
liancy of an otherwise clever game.
Hewitt usually prevented a bunch
of hits and bad his men behind htm
produced anything like consistent ball
the score would probably have been a
tie at the conclusion."
