I heard that L. would write oiy "life" When I gave up my breath. I felt that this Indeed would add A new delight to death. This was translated Into another lan guage, then from that Into another, and sd ou until a dozen versions hud tieen made. Of course there was u dllferent translator enc-h time. The hist version reads as follows: Dear. In my song you still shall live. Though under earth you He. Ah, had you now that grace to give 1 should not need to die! The Sewing Machine. Did you know a lighted match or ta per would do wonders witli tbe sewing machine? Try It some day. Light a candle or just a match and apply It to different parts of the wheels and cogs Lints and threads will burn, the char can be wiped off. and the machine will run twice as easily. When n machine gums It is advisable to remove tin- bead, place It in a tub and cover with gasoline. It makes a Dew mat-bine from an old one. Heroic War Measures. Cbuka, a great African native chief, trained a powerful army which was famous lu war. If a regiment was ! beaten It was slaughtered on Its . re , turn to the king's palace. If nny man ! lost his weapon In war be vas killed i for cowardice. If the cblef wanted to ; see what kind of weapons were most ; nuccessful he would order a sham fight with tbum In which real lives would ; be lost ! Worse Than the Upoer Ten. "Only the upper ten go to your cbnrcb, don't they?" Inquired the plain person. "Yea." replied tbe organist of the swell church, "but they're not a cir cumstance to the uppish tenor in our choir." Philadelphia Press. AFRICA'S GREAT DESERT! 8ahara Is Not All Barren and Has Two I Oiutlnot Populations, I . Tbe Sahara, that vast expanse or ; country lying to tbe south of Algeria, j Is commonly called "the desert":1 by ; Europeans. The name Sahara In no ' wise, however, menus "desert." It In simply the Arab appellation- of this ex tensive tract, mainly composed ol' great plains, which are even well pop ulated In certain districts. It Is pilte a mistake to imagine that nil Is Inrreii and sterile, for there are to lie lounn . large date palm plantation us well as numerous (locks of sheep mid great numbers of camels wblcb man musi tend and care for. The Sahara contains two distinct populations the one sedentary, the other uomad. The former live In the towns and villages, cultivating the soil nnd tending the date palms. The lat ter are shepherds, roaming from place to pluce in search of pasture for their cattle. How few are there In,, the home land who have any Idea of the Sahara or of the Arab tribes who live there! Travelers to these regions are compnp! lively rare, but all are amply repaid lor a visit. Life among tbe moving fonts of the nomads Is deeply Interesting in its primitive' simplicity. Tbe country it self has a grandeur and beauty wblcb is quite unique. Its rolling dunes pniuted with orange und crimson nnd gold against violet and purple shad ows at sunrise nnd sunset; its green oases, its wild sandstorms, its lovely mirages, once seen are never to be for gotten. While the . solemn silence strikes the soul with awe, one almost realizes why the Arabs call all this "the gurdeu of Allah." Christiau Uer aid. For Cause.
