' Count Tolstoi is dead,' and with his passing the world loses one of its most eccentric characters. He chose the life of an exile prior to death, not because of poverty but for novelty. He attracted attention by this act as he had attracted attention by many oth er strange acts. As a writer he has orlelnal. rotated and carried a stern conviction through all of his works. No industry in the Grande Ronde valley, whether large or small, should be overlooked by those who have the welfare of this valley at heart. To achieve the advancement due this region every inducement should be given any enterprise that will locate here, whether It be one of large or small dimensions. It really does not make much dif ference whether Mexico sends a dele gation across the line into this coun try or not, for if war is declared there will be nothing to it but additional country for the stars and stripes to wave over. VUta e Eafl""ifofl so far. no be took the next train for Pittsburg. The tenant of the b6use In Pitt burg proved to be a traveling cult wbo spent most of his time In the mid dle west The secret service man bad the good luck, however, to catch hlin Just as be had returned from a trip. and the man at once recognizee: me bad bill as one that had been given him bv a catient In Cleveland, tee very Doint whence the aleutb started. The carJent was a boss carpenter. Th secret service man got his addre from the ocnllat and went right after the new clew. At this point be bad a premonition that something was going to happen, and be wasn't disappointed. The carpenter, an honest old reiww. said that be had received the bill from certain Parker. The said . Parker was the small grocer In whose bank deposit the counterfeit had turned up. Th exDert flew to the grocers as quickly as a cab could take him an found it closed. He bad left town. Afterward it was shown-- beyond question that the grocer was the agent of an organized band of counterfeiters. His shop was a mere blind. That the bill which he gave the , carpenter should get back into his own funds after traveling ajl over the continent was one of those miracles of chance for which there Is no explanation. THE PRICE OF LOGS. SawlogB, like practically every oth er commodity that is bought and sold, have a value that is affected by both aualltv and supply and demand, is the opinion of the Oregbnian. For that reason it Is not surprising to learn that two sawlogs reported as Belling for $7.50 per thousand were $7.50 logs and not the No.'l logs which still command $10 to $12 per thousand. With the supply of timber diminish ing as rapidly as it 1b on the Pacific coaBt. which is practically the last etand of the logger and lumberman, the closing down of a few sawmills will hardly cause a slump of $2.50 ner thousand feet, as was reported from ABtorla a few days ago. With the exception of burned-over land, on which the damaged timber becomes wnrthlnRB unless removed within a reasonable time, ther is not much dangr of an over-supply of logB being placed In the water. . Stumpage values have reached a point where the amount of money Involved is sufficiently large to pre - -vent owners cutting timber until they have reasonable assurance that there will be a market for the logs as sat lsfactory prices. Water shipments, of lumber from the Columbia river this year will break all records. Employment For Skilled erot 8rviee Mon. The tracing of counterfeit bills back to the persons responsible for their Is sue is a curious and exciting employ ment. The expert assigned by the government to this work are among" the most skillful members of tbe se cret service. The protection of tbe currency depends In large measure up on their efficiency, and tbe pains they take are almost infinite. Tbe follow ing case is one Illustrating tbe diffi culties which the secret service people meet and overcome: A bank clerk In Cleveland bnd de tected a counterfeit twenty dollar hill In tbe deposit f a small retail jrroeer. An expert was sent for and under took the case. He found that the grocer had re ceived the bill from a shoe dealer, who had it from a dentist, wbo had It from somebody else, and so on. until tbe secret service man finally traced the bad note to an invalid woman wbo bad used it to pay her physician. When questioned this woman said that the money had been sent her by her brother, wbo lived In New Orleans. Tbe sleuth looked up tbe brothers antecedents and soon became con vinced that he was the man wanted. The brother, however, soon proved to the satisfaction or the secret seme. man that bis suspicions were unfound ed. Indeed, it appeared that the mon ey had been received by tire New Or leans man In Dart payment for rent of a house be owned In Pittsburg. While the sleuth was a bit dlscour aged, he couldn't give over the case Interest In Anolent Days. As a rule, the ancients frowned upon the idea of interest, they called it usury, and. except in , the case of wardships and trusts, when the law Insisted urjon money beimr usefully In vested they looked upon, the man who Hirnri hv Inreutmpnta BR it had char acter and his trade as a disreputable one. Even Aristotle, a most aavancea thinker in many respects, talked most energetically against money, calling It a "barren thing, which could produce nothing without violating nature." It was not until tbe crusades that tbe money lender had any standing or re spectability In Europe. New York American. , ' 8unday Traveling. Old time acts of oarliament In Great Britain aimed to stop Sunday travel ing. In 16C9. tor example, two men were found guilty of the crime of walking from Bristol to Bath on a Sunday and were at once fined 20 shil lings ($4.80) each. All business was at a standstill on a Sunday. Nothing was allowed to be sold except milk. For all tbe traders of England the milkman, and the milkman alone, was allowed to pursue bis calling for the Whole aeven days of the week. 8 ir n Exclusive Agents for Dr. Deimel Linen Mesh Underwear for Men Cotton and Mixed Underwear in All Qualities and Prices WEST, Ttlt QUALITY STORE Nov'er Sale of Ladies Suits, Coats, Jackets & Misses Coats tgsyy Itfiip sjfrSr freVi The Perfect Figure.
