Count Tolstoi is dead,' and with his
passing the world loses one of its
most eccentric characters. He chose
the life of an exile prior to death, not
because of poverty but for novelty. He
attracted attention by this act as he
had attracted attention by many oth

conviction through all of his works.
No industry in the Grande Ronde
valley, whether large or small, should
be overlooked by those who have the
welfare of this valley at heart. To
achieve the advancement due this
region every inducement should be
given any enterprise that will locate
here, whether It be one of large or
small dimensions.
It really does not make much dif
ference whether Mexico sends a dele
gation across the line into this coun
try or not, for if war is declared there
will be nothing to it but additional
country for the stars and stripes to
wave over.

THE PRICE OF LOGS.
SawlogB, like practically every oth
er commodity that is bought and sold,
have a value that is affected by both
aualltv and supply and demand, is
the opinion of the Oregbnian. For that
reason it Is not surprising to learn
that two sawlogs reported as Belling
for $7.50 per thousand were $7.50
logs and not the No.'l logs which still
command $10 to $12 per thousand.
With the supply of timber diminish
ing as rapidly as it 1b on the Pacific
coaBt. which is practically the last
etand of the logger and lumberman,
the closing down of a few sawmills
will hardly cause a slump of $2.50
ner thousand feet, as was reported
from ABtorla a few days ago. With
the exception of burned-over land, on
which the damaged timber becomes
wnrthlnRB unless removed within a
reasonable time, ther is not much
dangr of an over-supply of logB being
placed In the water.
. Stumpage values have reached a
point where the amount of money
Involved is sufficiently large to pre
- -vent owners cutting timber until they
have reasonable assurance that there
will be a market for the logs as sat
lsfactory prices. Water shipments, of
lumber from the Columbia river this
year will break all records. While
'', the unsatisfactory freight rates have
had some effect on the rail trade, it

Employment For Skilled
erot 8rviee Mon.
The tracing of counterfeit bills back
to the persons responsible for their Is
sue is a curious and exciting employ
ment. The expert assigned by the
government to this work are among"
the most skillful members of tbe se
cret service. The protection of tbe
currency depends In large measure up
on their efficiency, and tbe pains they
take are almost infinite. Tbe follow
ing case is one Illustrating tbe diffi
culties which the secret service people
meet and overcome:
A bank clerk In Cleveland bnd de
tected a counterfeit twenty dollar hill
In tbe deposit f a small retail jrroeer.
An expert was sent for and under
took the case.
He found that the grocer had re
ceived the bill from a shoe dealer, who
had it from a dentist, wbo had It from
somebody else, and so on. until tbe
secret service man finally traced the
bad note to an invalid woman wbo
bad used it to pay her physician.
When questioned this woman said that
the money had been sent her by her
brother, wbo lived In New Orleans.
Tbe sleuth looked up tbe brothers
antecedents and soon became con
vinced that he was the man wanted.
The brother, however, soon proved to
the satisfaction or the secret seme.

8unday Traveling.
Old time acts of oarliament In Great
Britain aimed to stop Sunday travel
ing. In 16C9. tor example, two men
were found guilty of the crime of
walking from Bristol to Bath on a
Sunday and were at once fined 20 shil
lings ($4.80) each. All business was at
a standstill on a Sunday. Nothing
was allowed to be sold except milk.
For all tbe traders of England the
milkman, and the milkman alone, was
allowed to pursue bis calling for the

ROYAL ACCOUNTS. y
Methods of the King of England In
Transacting Business.
No advertisement is more valuable
to a British tradesman than the royal
warrant, which allows him to place the
royal arms over his place of business
and describe himself ns "purveyor by

Each tradesman who lias the royal
custom must Bend iu his bill ut the end
of the month, it is compared with bis

House and If correct is paid in tbe
first week of tbe month. No discount
Is asked on any of the royal accounts.
A tradesman who receives the royal
custom is Informed that he must sup
ply goods at tbe lowest reasonable
prices, and there is never any attempt
.at bargaining by tbe official of tbe
