Ward who has been electod sheriff of Nottingham, haB had a remarkable career. Born in the Nottingham slums 51 years ago, he was sent to the work house school and when 12 years of age the guardians fcent him to a So"tb hampton training ship. Twelve month later he waa apprenticed on a mi. trawler but left when he was 16 and out of the guardian's control. Returning to Nottingham he became a pony driver in a local colliery, but owing to a strike of the miners In 1876 he was thrown out of employment. Be ing 19 years old and having but few termined to try his luck In the Aus tralian gold fields and obtained a gov ernment free passage. He, however, returned to Notting ham after 13 months and secured a sit uation aa porter in a large yeast fac tory and was later promoted to sales man. By strict attention to business he gained the firm's confidence and was subsequently admitted as a part ner, becoming In time the sole pro prietor. He Is now a member of the board of guardians, and two years ago was the chairman over the same institution which sent him to sea. He has been a member of the city council for the past five years. In politics he is a lib era! and is extremely-popular. Toang Lord Buys Aeroylane. London, Dec. 28. The young Duke of Westminster, who has purchased an aeroplane in which he hopes to make flights in the near future can be trust ed to provide Borne exciting moments for his friends and relatives when he once gets aboard for he is one of the most daring young sportsmen of the present day. He was on Lord Roberts' stair dur ing the South African war, and he has made many Journeys into the interior of Africa and America in seach of big game. As a child, the Duke of Westmin ster received the name of "Ben d'Or" after the lat duke' celebrated orse had won the Derby. To his friends he is still known by that name. Racing, however, has not taken the hold upon him that might have been expected in view of his Grosvenor blood and his immense wealth.
