SLUM BOY CARVED OWN CAREER
Apprenticed at Seaman He now
Sheriff of Nottingham.
la
London Dec. 28. Councillor Thos.
Ward who has been electod sheriff
of Nottingham, haB had a remarkable
career.
Born in the Nottingham slums 51
years ago, he was sent to the work
house school and when 12 years of
age the guardians fcent him to a So"tb
hampton training ship. Twelve month
later he waa apprenticed on a mi.
trawler but left when he was 16 and
out of the guardian's control.
Returning to Nottingham he became
a pony driver in a local colliery, but
owing to a strike of the miners In 1876
he was thrown out of employment. Be
ing 19 years old and having but few
termined to try his luck In the Aus
tralian gold fields and obtained a gov
ernment free passage.
He, however, returned to Notting
ham after 13 months and secured a sit
uation aa porter in a large yeast fac
tory and was later promoted to sales
man. By strict attention to business
he gained the firm's confidence and
was subsequently admitted as a part
ner, becoming In time the sole pro
prietor.
He Is now a member of the board of
guardians, and two years ago was the
chairman over the same institution
which sent him to sea. He has been
a member of the city council for the
past five years. In politics he is a lib
era! and is extremely-popular.
Toang Lord Buys Aeroylane.
London, Dec. 28. The young Duke
of Westminster, who has purchased an
aeroplane in which he hopes to make
flights in the near future can be trust
ed to provide Borne exciting moments
for his friends and relatives when he
once gets aboard for he is one of the
most daring young sportsmen of the
present day.
He was on Lord Roberts' stair dur
ing the South African war, and he has
made many Journeys into the interior
of Africa and America in seach of big
game.
As a child, the Duke of Westmin
ster received the name of "Ben d'Or"
after the lat duke' celebrated orse
had won the Derby. To his friends he
is still known by that name. Racing,
however, has not taken the hold upon
him that might have been expected in
view of his Grosvenor blood and his
immense wealth. He prefers the de
lights of riding his own horse to vic
