DAILY ISFLUX OF HOMESEKKUIS NOrT. Isdlasa Grosp Here, Aaxlsas to la. vest Locally. La Grande laureates hare sans songs of boost about outsiders com ing here tb look for land locations, hare "piped" up exultantly at the ar rival of one or two a week, but the past 10 days have seen half-dozens and more here dally. As soon as one party takes Us departure another comes and real estate 'men are 'kept busy continually showing prospec tive buyers the valley. Automobile! whls in and out with homeseekers. Following on the heels of the two parties here yesterday, another party of four from Perrysvllle, Indiana, ar rived In La Grande last evening and today toured the fruit centers. Three of them are farmers who have been In "Eastern Oregon and wasmiigum, and aside from what they saw In the Flathead reservation, have found nothing to compare with the activities they found here. The fourth, Lewis W. Morgan. Is now a general merchant, but was at one time a newspaper man at Perrys vllle. The party consists of C. C, J. C. and J. B. Person 8 and Lewis Mor gan. Two of the Parsons are out west to stay and will buy somewhere and the other two are not so anxious to remain, unless they find something to their particular liking. This party like all others, are here form one of two causes, or per haps both; reading Union county de scriptive literature or being sent here as a result of a visit to the fair where Union county's exhibit Is claiming attention. The first message from R. Plant, who has started In his home-made automobile for Medford a distance of 300 miles, was received this morning and from the tone and . contents of the letter one would Judge that he was having considerable trouble. The following Is the letter and will tell its own story: Meacham, Ore., 8, 12, 09, 5:30 a. m. Kingsley ACoger. ' First Message, , Broke one hind spring. :We had to pull vp hills with ropes. Our two grips fell oft ' going ' down : hill and we ran over them. We had on all brakes, but could not hold It We ran against a stump about 8 o'clock last night and tore off the muffler about one-half mile from Meacham, Yours Resp., ROBERT PLANT. Up to the present time there are no other names mentioned for the office of president of the Commercial club, but - that of John Collier. It seems that all are more than satisfied with the work of this man. Mr. Col-, lier has certainly filled the office with credit to himself and has done untold of good for the Grande Ronde and La Grande. He has never re fused his aid when It was requested, and always worked with that Tim and vigor which' has", went far to bring La Grande to the front The election of officers take place at the meeting of the club on next Mon day night ' " mm. LAND OFFICE DECISION. lleppncr Man Denied Hompsctcad He cause he Was Marshal. A decision has been handed down by Register Bramwell in the case of United States against John W. Ras mus of Heppner. The homestead proof Is denied on grounds that Mr. Rasmus was for four years employed by the city of Heppner as marshal, while attempting to hold down a homesetead. He affirms in his de fense that he hired men to do the work and. he lived on the homestead, but the records show that he drew a salary from the city of Heppner while he alleges that he hired men to do the work. vlflv TAIN 1 DID IWftl Mabel, the three year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Swartz, died this morning at the family residence at the corner of Ash and W. avenue.
