Samuel Flnley Breese Morse, in ventor of the electric magnetic tele graph, was born on this day, in 1791, sat Charlestown. JIass. He was edu cated at the common schools of his native village and later went to Vale ' College," where he graduated, 1810. During his leisure hours in college he painted, and after graduating, he took up art as profession. In 1811 he went to London with two well-known American artists of that period,' and : studied; under them and also under ' West and Copley." Hla proves was rapid and In 131 ho received a gold 'medal from.'-the Adelphl Society of Arts. His progress iii London, how ever, was more of a professional na ture than it was financial, and In 1851 .' because of Hck of funds he returned to the United States where he soon be came a popular portrait painter and prospered. In 1818 he married Lu cretla Walker, in Concord, N. H. About.thls time he and his brother in evented aa improved pump He be ' came prominent in ait circles, in New York, and founded the New York Drawing Association which in 1820 be came the National Academy of De sign. In 1826 he attended a series or ' lectures in New York City, on elec tricity. But it was not until a few years later when on a voyage return ing from France! a passenger engaged 4n conversation with him concerning 'some experiments certain French sci entists were conducting electric mag netic signaling. It occurred to him that news could be sent by that means. He spent the rest of his time during ihe voyage in making drawing of ,1jis proposed Invention and in begin ning his alfhabetic code. It was not until 183.-), that he was able to ex--h.blt an instrument Ifcfel was found to worn uu securing the funds to conduct his ex ,riments, often offering great pri vation, in 18:57 he perfected the In strument and secured a patent. But he was unable to secure from private parties the capital necessary. - UU inatelv in 1843. Congress gran ted him t to 0i)0 to construct an experimental lB from Washington to Baltimore. He had almost given up In dB,ali when at midnight at the last momoi.t of the session 'this appropriation wm tnade. His successful operation dem onstrated that his, invention w o longer in the expe'rimeutal stage and Tin came Into use throughout he world. For,hU important InventKm, Ir Morse was awarded by tertlmon ' Tals, hono, avy degrees uf noblUty ancl wealth. -The magnitude of hla dls Zr.es was acknowledged un ve. sally, and several European statu, Joined In presenting him a purse of Soo francs; and splendid banquet, were given to him in London an Paris. Morse died in New lork, April 2. 1871. No fan no matter how crazy he, or she la, enjoys a game to the full un loss the players are known. By the same token it will be much easier for us to be Interested in this season's struggle for the pennant than if . the players were all strangers. , - ; April 30 'is raisin day for every Californlan. For some reason the rai sin growers have found a poor mar ket for their product this year, and as a result they, have several hundred thousand pounds on hand that must be disposed of before the next crop comes In. If every loyal Californlan will eat a pound of raisins on April 30th,' the surplus will be greatly re duced. : . .-.. : ; If we had only thought of It, It would have been beneficial to have had our development league meeting two weeks earlier,' we needed the rain. However, there was general rejoicing this morning when it was ascertained that the valley had been blessed with a copious shower. , . : ' TRAINED WILD AMWALS OSE OF THE FEATURES The C. W. Parker shows, which ag gregation furnish the attractions for the La Grande carnival to be held here under the auspices of the Busi ness Men's Association the week of May 3rd, will this year. feature what is said to be the largest animal show f-n route the coming season. The col lection includes Nrblans Hons. Per sian leopards, Pataguntan bears, train-' ed elephants and a magnified group oi fine Arabian horses. The feature of the wild aiiiaml exhibition Is that of a young lady .trainer, Nellie Barnes who presents a full grown lion and compels him to mount and ride a galloping p'ony around the arena. Ac cording to press renorta of other cit ies this act Is a very spectacular, anc" is not duplicated anywhere eiea in a similar attraction. , The work of Martha Florine with arotip of leop ards is a very thrilling flight, for she Is a mere slip of a Breton maid, whose strength might be taxed by ordinary house cats, but she handles the dan gerous inhabitants of the Jungle with us much nonchalance and apparent fearlessness as If they were domestic animals. Edwin Kelly, who presents the five African lions, is a trainer of International reputation. His work fa Bsild to be pleasing professional and Tree from demonstrations of violence sometimes marking a performance of this kind. The animals with the Parker shown are superior animals to their kind, and represent an investment of many thousands of dollars. They are re markably well trained and perform in the arena with amazing ntelll;;enee. At the end of each performance a very interesting exhibition U given of a trainer 1 nthe. cage of an untamable, lion. The show people speak of this act as the "untamable" and it an un iv..nr.Mr. npftnrln. The head trainer goes Into the cage of this beast which Is. according to tne circus people a bad one. Very few managers of circuses have ever feat ured this long at a time as It is re garded as a really hazardous perform ance for a trainer to ko through.
