Samuel Flnley Breese Morse, in
ventor of the electric magnetic tele
graph, was born on this day, in 1791,
sat Charlestown. JIass. He was edu
cated at the common schools of his
native village and later went to Vale
' College," where he graduated, 1810.
During his leisure hours in college he
painted, and after graduating, he took
up art as profession. In 1811 he went
to London with two well-known
American artists of that period,' and
: studied; under them and also under
' West and Copley." Hla proves was
rapid and In 131 ho received a gold
'medal from.'-the Adelphl Society of
Arts. His progress iii London, how
ever, was more of a professional na
ture than it was financial, and In 1851

to the United States where he soon be
came a popular portrait painter and

cretla Walker, in Concord, N. H.

similar attraction. , The work of
Martha Florine with arotip of leop
ards is a very thrilling flight, for she
Is a mere slip of a Breton maid, whose

animals. Edwin Kelly, who presents
