Crawford was agreeably surprised lam evening at the Inntlgatlon of Mr. and Mr. J. Van Buren. at the Crawford home, when 10 guents filed In to surprise "Dad" In honor of the anniversary of his lt birthday. To say Mr. Craw ford was surprised la stating condi tions inadequately, for the event was so carefully planned that no Inkling of It had reached the victim's ears. The guests ansembled at $ J. J. Carr home and marched en masse to Mr. Crawford's home. In addition to the delight's of the evening, the Judge was presented w!th a beautiful traveling case, as a token of the esteem he holds. The amusement of the evening. In addition to the informal chats and n vernation, came with "500." at which J. J. Carr won the gentlemen prize and Mrs. E. E. Bragg the dies'. La n I us, the aged man shot during a quarrel In Union some time ago, was brought to La. Grande yes terday to undergo un operation deem ed necessary by the physicians In charge. Mr. Laniua never fully re covered and of late has been in a pi carious condition. Yesterday tt was decided that an operation was neces sary. - Today the attending physician, Dr. Cromwell of Union, arrived and held consultation with Dr. Hubbard. The operation was commenced at 1 o'clock this afternoon at the Grande Honde hospital. The aged man Is not stron and the' operation would have been avoided if there had been any possible escape from such s.teps. Drs. Hubbard and Cromwell performed the operation. Weather has been favorable, as a rule, to hard work, and in most Instances the rtiad is in shape to settle down to hard training. The. sprinting and hurdlling squad has been augmented In strength and numbers the past week by the reporting for training by Joe Williamson and Hamilton, both good men in that department. This will mean that the winners of the 50, 100 and 220-yard dashes will have to take victory front at least a half dozen barters In each event. interest in the early work has never been better than this spring and. en couraged by the large squad.
