was agreeably surprised lam evening
at the Inntlgatlon of Mr. and Mr. J.
Van Buren. at the Crawford home,
when 10 guents filed In to surprise
"Dad" In honor of the anniversary of
his lt birthday. To say Mr. Craw
ford was surprised la stating condi
tions inadequately, for the event was
so carefully planned that no Inkling of
It had reached the victim's ears. The
guests ansembled at $ J. J. Carr
home and marched en masse to Mr.
Crawford's home. In addition to the
delight's of the evening, the Judge was
presented w!th a beautiful traveling
case, as a token of the esteem he
holds.
The amusement of the evening. In
addition to the informal chats and
n vernation, came with "500." at
which J. J. Carr won the gentlemen
prize and Mrs. E. E. Bragg the
dies'. A two-course luncheon was
served by the hostess to fittingly cap
the climax to an evening of enjoyment
long to be remembered.

ago, was brought to La. Grande yes
terday to undergo un operation deem
ed necessary by the physicians In
charge. Mr. Laniua never fully re
covered and of late has been in a pi
carious condition. Yesterday tt was
decided that an operation was neces
sary. - Today the attending physician,
Dr. Cromwell of Union, arrived and
held consultation with Dr. Hubbard.
The operation was commenced at 1
o'clock this afternoon at the Grande
Honde hospital. The aged man Is not
stron and the' operation would have
been avoided if there had been any
possible escape from such s.teps. Drs.
Hubbard and Cromwell performed the
operation.
