Hewitt expects on Monday morning to occupy the room formerly occupied by James It. Smith for many years. County Assessor T. A. Rinehart left for Walla Walla this morning to spend n few days with his wife, who is there taking treatment. -, County Commissioner J. M. feeldcr returned to his Cove home this morn ing, after having attended the March term of the county court. Edward Roberts, son of Receiver A. A. Roberts, arrived in the city last evening from Pendleton, for a short Vvisit. Mrs. James A. Russell, who has been visiting her aged sister, Mrs. "Welch, In Pendleton, and other rela tives for the past three weeks, re turned home last evening. Rev. King writes from Everett, "Wash., that he and his family are now comfortably located at 3110 Colby avenue. Thus far, at least, they are well pleased with the new location Mrs. William Morrison, who has been visiting her mother, Mrs. Fred Schilke the past few days, returned to her home at North Powder this morn ing. Assessor Rinehart made his week end visit to Walla Walla today to vis it with his wife, who is recuperating at the Garden City. Mrs. Rinehart Is reported as improving slowly. vvunotvu county is gelling quite a few of the homeseekers. No less than a dozen, have passed through the city n route there the pust two days. Henry Chambers, In a letter to The Observer from Cove, states that the section of the valley there was covered with snow to a depth of four Inches last Wednesday morning. Rut as his garden was seeded he was glad. G. E. McCully and wife spent Thurs day and Friday at Hot Lake, going over with 'Mr. and Mrs. F. R. Swaney. Mr. Swaney will take treatment at the sanatorium, and Mrs. Swaney will re main a few days with him. W. F. Matlock of Pendleton, is at Hot Lake with his daughter, .Mrs. rrca Lanta, and his sister-in-law, Mrs. Carl Wheeler, who are at the sanatorium for treatment. Mr. Matlock Is the eastern Oregon representative on the state fair board. J. E. Reynolds and Mr. and Mrs. Fred J. Holmes returned this morn ing from the Calgary country, where they have been looking over the pos sibilities of that rapidly developing country. They report having had a roost pleasant trip. visitor a few hours today, en route home to his home near Elgin from "Walla Walla, where he has been vis iting the past thre weeks. Trftcy Neuman, the timber cruiser, Is home from a week's visit on busi ness matters at Canyon City. Mrs. J. J. Peck, who has been vis iting friends In Elgin several days, has returned home. " Mike Woodard, a former business man of Union, but now located at Ba ker City, is a La Grande visitor today. Mr. and Mrs. I. W. Bach, of Imbler, came up this afternoon to spend Sun day with La Grande friends.. Thomas Wynn continues to hover between life and death at his home In South La Grande. His condition- Is no better this afternoon. Mrs. H. E. Oakes of Enterprise, who has been visiting the past two months In South Dakota, pased through the city this morning en route home. F. W. Garner, a brother-in-law of Officer J. W. Black, arrived In the city yesterday from St. Anthony, Idaho, and Is looklni? over the valley with a view of locating here. A letter from Long Beach to rela tives here, states that Engineer and Mrs. John Gardner will reach home af ter their California tour, on April 1. J. F, Martin, a prominent Insurance man of Seattle, ami a erotner-ln-law of William Ramsey, was a passenger on the morning train en route home from Prattle, Mrs. Jacob Bowers of Enterprise, who has been visiting friends in Oma ha the past three months, has been a visitor In this city the past few days, and returned home this morning. Saturday crowds today thronged the business places to a degree not equal led In late months. Generally speak ing, the roads are In flrst-cclass con dition when the valley proper Is reached. Vern Hendricks, who Is attending St. John's school at Manllus, N. Y., was In Washington during the inaug uration ceremonies and we all know that La Grande was duly represented on this occasion. Another freight crew was put on yesterday. Railroad business Is pick ing up In all departments, freight as well as passenger. There are very few men on the extra list at present. No. 1, the morning westbound train, came In two sections again today, the colonist section carrying . 1 73 through fares. The first section carried local passenKers, baggage, mall and express. This arrangement will be the govern ing rule through the entire colonlstic season. One hundred and twenty students of the four primary rooms in the brick school in North Lai Grande accom panied by their teachers', lmtrrhcd in perfect step through 'our streets today and attracted attention from nil quar ters. It was easily explained, however, when one cf the teachers stated that they had simply accepted the invita tion of the managers of the Pastime theater to attend the matinee this af ternoon In a body.
