The work of tho Eo.vs A Girls' Aid society In Portland, has become so .well known throughout the state of Oregon, that It Is almost needless to give any detailed account of Jt, but for the Information of those who do not know, a few extracts from the last annual report of the society may. be Interesting writes tho superintendent to The Observer. During the fiscal year Just past the society received S73 children.- These were on hand at the receiving home at Portland the first of the year 65, thus making the total number of children 428. Out of this number 47 were found places to work for wages, 15S were placed In family homes where u they received, their clothes, board and schooling: S2 were placed out for legal adoptlpn; 1 were returned to parents or relatives; S3 were sent to other institutions, and 12 were discharged, having come of age; making the total number disposed of 376, thus leaving on hand at the re ceiving home the first of the year 82. Out of the number received during the year there were 207 new cases, of which 131 were boys and 76 girls. The average of the girls was 10.7, and the average age of the boys 9.3. The fol lowing counties contributed to this number: Baker S, Benton 5, Clacka mas S, Clatsop 1, Columbia 1, Coos 1, Crook 2, Wouglas 6, Jackson 1, Jose prine 2, Klamath 2, Lane 12, Linn 5. Malheur 2, Marlon 6, Multnomah 117, Sherman! SK Tillamook 6, Union 2, Umatilla 6, WallowaV 2, Wasco 6, Washington 9, Yamhill 6. The work of the Boys & Girls' Aid society Is now bearing fruit. Superin tendent Gardner sasy that they re ceive quits a number of letters and visits from children who were once In their care, but who have now become of age, and these visits are very pleas ant, as It shows that in many case the children turn out to be good and useful citizens, who otherwise woulrl be a care and expense to the commu nity. .. ;' . , '. .' : The donations from the public schools of the state and from private oltlrens mnkes It possible for the man agement tp care for the. children who come under Its guardianship In the mot economical manner and also feet? and clothe them perhaps, better than any other Institution In the state, and the society now appeals to all those who have the welfare of dependent ..titir.... a .brlH trtwurd this excellent institution this Thanks giving.
