The work of tho Eo.vs A Girls' Aid
society In Portland, has become so
.well known throughout the state of
Oregon, that It Is almost needless to
give any detailed account of Jt, but for
the Information of those who do not
know, a few extracts from the last
annual report of the society may. be
Interesting writes tho superintendent
to The Observer. During the fiscal
year Just past the society received S73
children.- These were on hand at the
receiving home at Portland the first
of the year 65, thus making the total
number of children 428. Out of this
number 47 were found places to work
for wages, 15S were placed In family
homes where u they received, their
clothes, board and schooling: S2 were
placed out for legal adoptlpn; 1 were
returned to parents or relatives; S3
were sent to other institutions, and 12
were discharged, having come of age;
making the total number disposed of
376, thus leaving on hand at the re
ceiving home the first of the year 82.
Out of the number received during the
year there were 207 new cases, of
which 131 were boys and 76 girls. The
average of the girls was 10.7, and the
average age of the boys 9.3. The fol
lowing counties contributed to this
number: Baker S, Benton 5, Clacka
mas S, Clatsop 1, Columbia 1, Coos 1,
Crook 2, Wouglas 6, Jackson 1, Jose
prine 2, Klamath 2, Lane 12, Linn 5.

The work of the Boys & Girls' Aid
society Is now bearing fruit. Superin
tendent Gardner sasy that they re
ceive quits a number of letters and
visits from children who were once In
their care, but who have now become
of age, and these visits are very pleas
ant, as It shows that in many case
the children turn out to be good and
useful citizens, who otherwise woulrl
be a care and expense to the commu
nity. .. ;' . , '. .'
: The donations from the public
schools of the state and from private
oltlrens mnkes It possible for the man
agement tp care for the. children who
come under Its guardianship In the
mot economical manner and also feet?
