Hood River comes forward with another original stunt In the fruit business. Beginning with the 14th of September and con tinuing for a period of one week, the Hood River Apple Growers' union will open a school In which will be taught the science of apple packing. The union has concluded to use Its spacious ware rooms on railroad row for the purpose of training all those who desire to learn the art of packing apples for the commercial trade, ac cording to the Hood River standard. There are several different ' styles of pack to learn; and one must also be exact on color and size. With these essentials well learned, the matter of rapidity will soon duvelop Itself. . The apple growers are - asked to furnish windfalls and culls . for the purpose of demonstration In the school; and the union will provide the expert packers to Impart the necessary Instructions to the student packers. All who desire to be taught the apple packing business for this fall's rush will report to Manager Huxley and be on hand promptly mi lic.It; fled. . There will be no expense to the student other than his board and lodging while In the city! The matter of packing the apple crop In Hood River valley Is becoming to be a proposition of oolpssal propor tions. In a year or two It will require a small army of men, women and children to harvest the rosacaous fruit and prepare It for transit. The labor of picking and packing is both delightful and remunerative. It Is expected that a large class will be on hand the opening day. Farmers, bring your apples a few days previ ous! Topping arrived In Baker City this morning, there was a carload of hay afire, says the Baker City Herald. An alarm was Immedi ately turned In and within a remark ably short time the firemen were on the scene and had a stream of water on the blaze. It did not take them long to dump the hay out and put out '.he fire. The car was damaged con lilerably and the hay will be almost a total loss. The car or hay was taken on at Haines and when they were out a short litttnnco the conductor discovered that the car was afire. A quick run was made to this city and the alarm turned In by George Jett. The conductor and those at the train were surprised at the quick run, for Rrlg and Eagle took to the work like a duck to water, and with Frank Grabner holding the lines, hey lost no tlint?
