Grazing Land Subject of Long Litiga tion, Settled at Iat. t . Both local and foreign interest centers In a decision of the local land office relative to grazing land. A Pendleton paper outlines the decision and its precedent: Considerable significance is attached by local lawyers to the decision ren dered by the land office department and reported from La Grande yester day to T. J. Tweedy of this city. In which Mr. Tweedy won out in the land contest case which has been hanging fire for several months. It Is said thnt the decision of 'the case throws light upon the way In which the fed eral authorities will decide the land cases which will come before the fed eral court this fall. Briefly reviewed, the history of tha entire matter is this: In 1885, under the Slater bill the reservation was cut down and a large area was thrown open for sale at auction. Most of th land. Including the weedy ranch, whs not bid upon at ait. . !l ,' , In 1801 a bill was passed reopentnj the land for sale, with the require ment attached that to acquire title a man must live upon his land one year and cultivate 25 acres. : ; The Fulton bill, passed In 1805, pro vided for the patenting of lands' unfit tor cultivation as grazing land. tJnder this provision Tweedy gained title to his land. ' And Amos F. Boyne ' Con tested his claim on the ground tha. the land was fit for cultivation an 1 more than mere grazing land. Whim, therefore, the land office rendered it decision in favor of Mr. Tweedy, the decision was taken as setting a presi dent in all the cases involved in that district, for Tweedy'a ranch Is said t J be one ot the best in that'regton. The Tweedy ranch consists of 140 acres, about four mties west ot Mea cham, and is said to consist largely 1 1 .Imber and rocks. Tet it is considered ..ie best of the lands Involved in the -vderal Indictments, to be tried this -alt For this reason the case Is con sidered significant and will have a tell ing weight in the other cases as they involve practically the same conditions .4 did the Tweedy case. Still Walling for Light. Last night Pendleton was again In darkness and the currentTiad not yet been turned on at I o'clock this after noon. However, at that time the elec tric people were expecting to se the light on at almost any mlnuta. It : explained that the delay la turn- taT on the current I due to the diffi culty In drying out the machinery at t" power plant. Though the plant is uninjured the machinery became iktd by the flood and it must be I j.-oughly dried before the plant can i used. Pendleton East Oregonlan. TICKETS (JAX UK PRAT AID. Old sores exist because the blood ie infected with impurities and poisons which are constantly being- discharged into tbe plsce.
