They are Intimate friends of Dr. and Mrs. P. A. Charlton. J. Frank Evans, formerly a drug clerk In the Red Cross drug store, writes from Los Angeles that he will be In La Grande In a week or so. He makes the trip to Portland by water. T. J. Gray, who purchased the Blue Mountain house of L. A. Livingston, has taken possession. Mr. Gray has recently arrived from Alabama, and Is well pleased with this section of the country. Mrs. C. C. Pennington and daugh ter are expected home from a visit to Portland and Salem next Saturday. Mrs. Pennlngtonwas quite 111 while at Salem, and was forced to go to the hospital. She Is well now, however. J. D. Vurplllat of WInnlmac, Ind., arrived this morning to visit with his son, C. A. Vurplllat of this city. Mr. Vurplllat attended the Denver conven tion and had planned to arrive early In tho week. His stay hero will be ex tended. Governor Chamberlain Is expected to visit our city Saturday In the ca pacity of an attorney, being Interest ed In the Nodlne case, which will come up before Judge Knowles. ' Mr. and Mrs. E. P. Wllley -were In from their Allcel home today on busi ness matters. . Allcel was one of the sections that can stand a little more ruin.. : , ' No. 5, which should, have arrived here last night at 9:55, did not reach this city- until 8:50 this morning. The delay was caused by a wreck of a freight' train east. No one was tn Jured. ' James McCoy, -who recently moved with his family to. Spokane, came In on the morning train. He will re main a few days on business and It Is. possible that he may return to the Grande Ronde to make this his home again. L. II. Ricks, who for soma time past ha maintained a peanut and popcorn stand on the corner of .Ad ams avenue and Depot street, made a trip of Investigation to Baker yester day, and will take his wagon up there as being a better town for his busi ness. 1 V Walter Pierce says he haa a field of excellent spring grain and the rain and cool weather the past few days will cause the fall grain to fill nicely. He states that there will be more grain in the valley this year than many would lead us to believe. Sheriff Chlldcrs has picked the um pire who will offlicate at the Cove Elgin game here next Sunday after noon, but none even tho contesting teams will know who the rnan select ed Is, until both teams are on the field to play. Mrs. John Hallcy, Mrs. Anna Gra ham and MIhb Frankle Heritage came over from Union last night and are guests of La Grande friends for a few days. After their visit here Mrs. Gra ham will return to her home In Port land, accompanied by Mrs. Halley, and Mrs. Heritage will go to Walla Walla to visit Miss' Maud Morton. Mr. nnd Mrs. Lloyd Scrlber left to day for Thomson's ranch on Kathcr Ino creek to spend a week In camp ing. Theer are already several La Grande parties on that popular stream and more are going In the course of the next two week. Mr. and Mrs Scrlber will pitch their tent near the Merry Widow 'resort. In the Interest of the Tanglefoot magazine, A. P. Noblitt cf Portland. Is In La Grande today. The magazine Is a new publication similar to the Philistine and teems with good things splendid for the blues. Mr. Noblitt was at one time editor of the Free water . Times.
