Today we 'reprint a how"! from the Baker City Democrat which, perhaps. Is a little more vindictive than the Herald's "expose." The Ob server always looks with distaste on anything bordering oi the acts of ruf fians, but from what Information there is at hand, the visitors from Raker f'ltv xoemlnarlv failed to-take a Joke and converted fun Into serious ness. If the editor of the Democrat would hide himself In a large city on the eve of a football game between rival colleges he might learn some thing about breaking up demonstrative parades on the streets. If the La Grande boys did. commit deeds unbe coming sportsmen, The Observer ex-, tends apologies to the Baker City vis itors, but at this writing It seems the visitors were a bit hasty, and the ar ticle following" herewith, written while the writer was still warm un der the collar: "Sunday there were 247 tickets sold for the excursion to La Grande. The Baker boys who went over were bent on a good time, and wanted to see a good game of ball. The band went with the excursion, but their number Is not Included In the number of tick ets sold. The game was fought ouf with the best of feeling until La Grande lost the garaa, then they were In for a fight. Some of them. The good citi zens of the city are exempt from what ever castlgatlon may be given to the laraklns pf La Grande who wanted to create a disturbance, unmindful thnt the Baker citizens were visitors to the city and should have the courtesy of common decency If such was possible from the La Grande' outlaws, some of whom are in the La Grande baseball team. If there ever was an aggrega tion of unsportsmanlike men gnthered Into one company, commend us to the La Grande baseball team. The Baker lioys were In marching lino going through the streets of La Grande when the disturbance bftfnn by some of their undi sintl.liM. I' d by Pat Foley. Thr-y attempted to break the line of the, linker boys with Dr. Notz In the lead. Foley evidently did not know thnt Notz wits the iiulc-tcst nnd most unuf-' rending man In the world, until Im posed upon, ond tlun lie turned Into a magnificent fighting machine, and, as Foley bumped up against Notz, the doctor landed on F"l y" neck and Foley laml.d on his neck In the strrvt. Another came after the doc tor and he landed him, and there was evidence of a fierce flitht until the Pnker visitors, led by C. It. McCollnrh and James Oshorn and others, calmed the crowd, but tho La Grande boys learned that the linker boys could handle their dukes as well as the ball und tho fowardly asallants sneaked sway and nursed their sores. They fight llko they play ball, all wind and bluff, and for tho good of the game and for the decency of clean sport they will bo known no more In the league, llolse will take their place in the lengtie game. Wo cannot blnme the good people of La Grande for the conduct of the ruffians who In fest their illy. The , good citizens should chain up the buffoons whom they know live In their midst until such time as they know their visitors depart. The good name of the city demands this. There was a discour tesy thatwas Inexcusable, When the linker Concert band rendered a con ceit In front of the hotel, that not a corporal's guard of tho citizens ac corded them the courtesy of coming out to heor the best band In eastern Oregon. Notwithstanding that, some of the La Grande hoodlums had thrown s stone Into the bell of the new bass horn and done Irreparable dam age. We cordially Invite the La Grande people to visit Baker City and will give them the best times of their lives. We will show them the cour tesy a host should extend to Ms guests. As It Really Happened. In the first place the "undesirables" as the Democrat calls them, were, not led by Tat Foley. In the second place.
