The best man we have In our town fox the general good of the town, Is the one you will always sec on the front sent In the progressive "band wagon." He Is the flrHt one to ex tend an open end warm hand to greet the stranger and welcome him to the best town In the state. Ho will resent an Insult to our town as quickly as he wpuld a slur at a member of his fam ily. He very politely Invites the chronic croaker to "move on." He Is every ready to give his Just propor tion to every public enterprise, lie talks up our town at home and abroud and believes It the best place upon Ood's green earth In which to live, and desires to be burled here when he dies. Let us all try and be like this man for one year and our little city will take on new life and Im prove as never before In its history. m Thfc Commercial club Is certainly on the right lead In protesting against the filling In around the depot with cin der. "The O. R. & N. should consider that it owe something to this city. The policy of depot improvements in Idaho Is In striking contrnHt with tho policy in Oregon. In our sister state, Welser, Caldwell, Niimpa and other points, are all provided with nice stone depots and lawns. A nice tittle lawn between the depot and Jefferson ave nue would be a welcome to every one. entering our city from the train. Mr. O'Brien wrote a nice reply to the com munication from the secretary of the club, and stated that he had referred the matter to Superintendent J. M. Buckley. Prohibition Question Is Chief Isitue In .Mu I ne Democratic Convention. Pangor, Me., July 15. With a cut and dried program, providing for the nomination of Obadlah Gardner, of Rockland, for governor, upon a plat form demanding the resubmission of the prohibition clause of the constitu tion to a popular vote, the democrats of Maine begun their state convention In City hall at 1:30 this afternoon. The republicans rece'ntly nominated Bert II. Fernald of Poland, for gov ernor, on a platform opposing remib mlsslon. Fernnld holds that It will bo unwise to Imperil prohibition, which has been on the statute books for more than half a century, by re submitting It to a decision of the vot ers. The cnmpalgn will be fought but on this' clear-cut Issue and the demo cratic leaders In attendance at today's Convention declare that It will mean a democratic victory. They allege that public sentiment favors resub mission and point out that the repub lican majorities have been cut down from 4S.000 to 8000 In the last few years by the liquor agitation. The republican plntform declares emphatically for the continuance of prohibition. The democratic platform will assert that ' under a republican form of government tho majority should decide the question, while no pi siive stand will be taken either for or nnulnst prohibition. Democratic politician declare that the prohibition law has become a farce and a source of graft and cor ruption and that. If the people decldi tn retain It. tho statute should bo stv'. ily enforced. .''rue of the most noted temperance r;M rs of the country will com to ti e assistance of the Maine reioihll- Mew eif.s during the campaWn. There Is little doubt that the com ing cnmpalgn will be one of the hot test In 'the history of the stnte and that the republicans have the strong est fight In years on their hands. Two, Socials.
