Telephone Fanner 1171. AND OPTICIANS resetting and repairing PISH III TO JOSEPH In the afternoon mall budget from the east to General Manager J. P. O'Brien of the O. R. ifc N. company, yesterday came the long expected In structions from New York to proceed with construction of the Elgin-Joseph branch, says the . Portland Journal. About 1500,000, the amount necessary to complete the line, has been pro vided. From 100 to 400 men will be put on at once. For the last two months authoriza tion from Mr. Harrlman for this work has been expected dally. As soon as the effects of last year' money strin gency began to wane Mr. O'Brien made application for the necessary funds to complete the road to Joseph. A reported In the Journal at that tlir.e, the Instruction to proceed were ineviutiuv, U.i V.nc n b jilt too far to abandon It, and the completion of the track to Joseph was only a question of a short time. The work could not well have been resunv ed earlier than the present time, owing to the copious rains and fate soft con dition of the grade. Tap Rich Region. The Wallowa county extension will be about 13 miles and will tap one of the richest livestock, grain and fruit raising sections of the Inland empire. The scenic beauty of Wallowa county Is a feature of the extension. It is said the road will open a region that Is a paradise for the tourist and sports man. .About 15 miles of the line, from El gin through the Grande Rondo can yon, Ig already In operation, and the grade Is completed to within a few mile of the entrance to the Wallowa valley. It Is believed that with the energy General Manager O'Brien will throw Into the work the road can be completed Into Joseph within the next three or four months. Rood Through Mountains. The route Is a difficult one for about half the distance from Elgin to Joseph. It runs through a very lough mountainous region, subject to severe storms of rain and snow In their sea sons, and only the most substantial construction work will hold. The roaO will be first-class construction, of the same character that Chief Engineer Boschke has laid In the Lewiston Rlparla line, the Ihvaco extension, and numerous main line changes. About 11,000,000 has already been spent on the Elgin-Joseph branch, and when completed It will have cost In the neighborhood of $1,500,000. WHITMAN GRDCATION.
