Cake la not loyally favoring Statement No. 1. and making his campaign on that Issue, the re publican nominee for United States senator. H. M. Cake, stands as square ly on statement No. 1 today as ha did when he opened his campaign In the republican primaries, says a Port land paper. Repeated attempts have Kn mnri to plnuit the Issue, arid the Intimation has been sent out that Mr. Cake Is not as firm a believer In the doctrine as he originally announced himself. These Intimations and attacks were boldly met today by Mr. Cake In an Interview to the Telegram. In this Mr. Cake does not equivocate and as sures the voters of the state that In no respect has his view, changed, and that he Is advocating statement No, 1 today as he has for a long period. Last summer, when Mr. Cake was discussed as a possible nominee for senator, he said that If he entered the race It would be on a statement No. 1 platform, and he Is still carrying out this plan. Mr. Cake declares that Governor Chamberlain waited until after the primaries when he saw that he might profit by the advocacy of the state' mrpt, and now comes into tha open and urges the statement and the elec tion of democrats to the legislature. Regarding the counties where anti statement men have been nominated for the legislature, Mr. Cake will not Interfere. He contends that the peo ple have selected their candidates and he refuses to follow the advice of Chamberlain, that he, Cake, antagon ize the nominees who have been se lected by the people.
