At their regular meeting last eve ning the board of -managers of the La Grande Commercial' club took steps, which It Is believed, will In a day or two close and consummate the. deal that has been hanging fire between the club and one of the severai pub licity bouses of .the west, which made bids to take charge of the. publicity, work for the city of La Grande. j Representatives of several promi-j nent firms have been In La Grande of late trying to close a deal with the club managers, but until last night nothing looking like definite action was taken. As the deal Is not con summated, there being several details yet to be attended to by the firm it self, . everything Is pot settled. For this reason the board thinks best not to disclose the detailed plans or the firm which was given the contract. Gasoline Boat Tank Explodes Killing Seven Occupants of the Boat. Memphis, Tenn., May 20. Seven persons lost their lives and nine nar rowly escaped destruction In an acci dent which befell a gasoline launch oh the Columbia, eight miles north of Clarendon, Ark., last night. The tank exploded. The drowned are: Misses Lillian Wlnfleld. Alma Peets, Nattie Counts, Bessie Palmer, Aline Burton, Joseph McManus and Dr. A. J. Huston. ' EVIDENCE AGAINST IIEMBREE. Hun dreds of spectators who had camped on the beach at Newport during the night, were up with the sun, sweep ing the horizon for the first thin streak of smoke which would Indicate the coming of the great fighters. The riots of last night were followed by unusual quiet this morning In the street car strike In this city, but tn anticipation of equally riotous disturbances today the police force was Increased along the car lines. Small knots of strikers and friends gathered about the car barns early In the day but made no attempt to In terfere with the running of cars. Five men who were wounded In Tuesday's riot, wers reported to be resting easily this morning, and out of danger. No arrests had been made up to noon to day In connection with the blowing up of five cars with dynamite shortly af ter midnight ' ' The most serious disturbances Tues day was the attempt on the part of a mob to lynch the conductor who ran over small girl, Yeta Wollnskl, and killed her.
