" ' - ' It is evident from expressions heard : on every side that the voters are fully iwttre oi the (inference between Cham berlain as a candidate for governor, and Chamberlain as a candidate for United States senator. Many voted for him for governor who will not think of voting for him to be senator. They , realize that the former office is pure ly an executive one, and the latter a , legislative One. ' The governor's duty is to enforce the law and the senator makes the law. One establishes the policy and the other carries out the policy as made for him. The citizens of Oregon are not going to send a democrat to the United States senate, No one need worry about that. Extend the glad hand. During times of municipal publicity every citizen of La Grande should realize that he has been appointed a member of the en tertalnmont committee, whose duty it is to offer the glad hand to the 'r&svr. This does not mean that it Is necessary to become a "gushvr," but , a few pleasant words and an apparent Interest In the stranger will do won ders toward making him feel at home In our city. Just a handshake and a pleasant salutation Will some times do much toward creating a new citizen. 4a-. Bteps should be taken to secure Vinegar plant and an apple dryer. Thousands of lAishels of second grade apples go without a market In thin Valley each year. This Is a great loss ; and really there Is no good reason why It should be true. In other fruit sections the second grade fruit is marketed at a profit by means of dry ers and vinegar plants and why should, not La Grande provide similar means. WINNERS AT WHITMAN. We were not exactly suffering for add! Uonal moisture, but farmers all agree that the yield will be materially In creased by the warm rain which fell last evening. Union county farmers are always certain of full crops and the reason therefore Is largely because of the fact that we can always depend on rains In May and June. e The La Grande Commercial club U perfecting plans for tho proper adver tising of La Grande and Union county The club will give special attention to securing manufacturing plants as well MENAGERIE - MUSEUM) (i ft stixK AND . .
